Dancing About Architecture 05.13.08
Posted by Ian Wright on 05.13.2008

The bit at the start

Hi, first off I want to thank Adam Tool for stepping into the breach for me last week. Much appreciated and he did a great job.

It's been a busy week for me gig wise. I saw Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip play their entire spiffy new album on Wednesday night and then the following night Deerhunter took another route completely by showcasing material almost exclusively from their soon to be released third album. It's a lot more song oriented then the last record they put out and some people may not like the departure they've taken but there were a couple of tunes which utterly blown my mind. They've still not got a song to top "Strange Lights" though.

Man Man last night was intense.

But pride of place goes to Jonathan Richman. I'm a big Modern Lovers fan but I'm not that familiar with his work since then. I have to concede that he was utterly magical, possibly the best gig I've seen in a year. It was just himself playing a classical guitar and a drummer but he was so incredibly charming, with a constant twinkle in his eye and unendlessly charismatic. People were giggling like kids at seemingly random points in the set and it was only midway through it did I realise that it was because he'd caught their eye and was giving them a funny luck.

Anyway, enough with my past. It's time for the news (after an album recommendation).

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Man Man - The Man in a Blue Turban with a Face.

Their debut, better than their latest.

You news, you lose

Big stories always break when I take a week off.

Last time it was the Radiohead record being released in super double quick time story. This time it's the announcement of My Bloody Valentines first US tour in a loooonnnnngg time.

Here are the dates if you've missed them …

09-19-21 Monticello, NY - Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
09-22 New York, NY - Roseland
09-23 New York, NY - Roseland
09-25 Toronto, Ontario - Ricoh
09-27 Chicago, IL - Aragon Ballroom
09-30 San Francisco, CA - The Concourse
10-01 Los Angeles, CA - Santa Monica Civic
10-02 Los Angeles, CA - Santa Monica Civic

Tickets are, I believe on sale now and the CA dates as of Monday still had tickets available. Boy oh boy oh boy I'm seeing them next month, I can't wait.

In other MBV news the band are planning on remastering Loveless and Isn't Anything and putting them out in some sort of deluxe package deally. The earlier album will come in a single disc format while Loveless gets the double disc treatment, the first disc has the album remastered from both DAT and analogue tape and the second just from tape. There's also talk of a vinyl pressing coming out later in the year. But both remasters will be out in the UK on June 16th to coincide with their first set of dates in London that week.

I'm actually unsure if this is all that good an idea to be honest, the magic of Loveless in particular is the way that it already sounds and fucking with it just for the sake of having an excuse to charge full price for the CD for the first time in a decade and as a result losing the magic of it would be a shame. Just so long as they don't compress the fuck out of it. There'll be hell to pay if they compress the fuck out of it.

Venn is this festival?

June 5-8.

Vere is it?

In and around Bristol in England.

Vat's vit all vese "v"'s?

Well it's called the Venn Festival, I'm punning.

Vo is playing at it, actually that one doesn't work. Who is playing at it?

Fuck Buttons, Why?, Matmos, Pole, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Philip Jeck, Black Devil Disco Club, Infinite Livez vs. Stade, Afrikan Boy, the Heliocentrics, Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Flying Lotus, Anni Rossi, Hauschka.

Aside from the lineup (Fuck Button and Why? especially, who have put on 2 of the best gigs I've seen all year) the interesting thing is the places where they'll be playing. Eschewing traditional venues the gigs will instead take place in "Planetariums, scout huts, skate parks, and other mischievously appropriated spots around the city," which sound ridiculously awesome. Fuck Buttons in a scout hut would be insane.

Still won't be as good as Different Class.

Jarvis Cocker is working on the follow up to his debut solo album from 2006 but according to the NME he's taking his sweet time doing it. The magazine/comic book for indie teenagers is reporting that he's got "vague ideas" for songs that he'd like to do "before the end of the year".

These idea's being vague he barely has song titles sorted but "The Usual" and "Girls Like It Too" (a song about the male idea of the female libido) are possibilities.

So vague in fact are his ideas that there's little else in the way of stuff to write about.

And the little there is hardly merits coverage.

Yet I've done it.

And it keeps his profile up.

I've been had.

Fuck you Cocker.

More Festival news.

This time it's Accelerator in Sweden. Which I guess if of no use to you if unless you're from Swedan. Or planning your itinerary for a trip around Europe. Or just really want to see Stockholm and need a music related excuse to go. But anyway it's taking place in the city's München-Bryggeriet from June 24-25 with Band of Horses, Vampire Weekend, Hercules and Love Affair, Battles, Stars, Deerhunter, El Perro del Mar, St. Vincent, Fuck Buttons, Black Kids, MGMT, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Those Dancing Days, Foals, the Teenagers, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, and Duffy already announced to play.

Much like most festivals there's some good band's playing at this and some not so good ones.

Common News.

Or … "The latest in an infrequent series of Hip Hop news items".

Common has a new album ready to go. It's called Invincible Summer and according to his MySpace page it'll be out on June 24th.

According to Billboard the album is electro tinged and one of the songs samples a riff from Pat Benatar's "Love Is A Battlefield". Which is kinda frightening.

Common told Billboard, "I created this music for the summer time. It's about feeling good. This is the type of music I felt was missing from my body of work. Unlike on his recent efforts Kanye West will not be producing this record and he's instead turned to the Neptunes and Outkast producer Mr. DJ. Cee-Lo, Santogold, and Neptunes associates Chester French will feature as guests.

"Universal Mind Control (U.M.C.)" should be the lead single and will be out at the end of the month.

Preliminary tracklist:

Universal Mind Control (U.M.C.)
Make My Day [ft. Cee-Lo]
Punch Love
What a World [ft. Chester French]
Changes
Party Shit
Dreaming
Runaway [ft. Santogold]

The bit at the end

May is fucking crazy for gigs in Dublin. Throw in the festival I'm going to in England next week and I'm going to be sick of live music by the time June comes around. Anyway, god speed and I shall type at you again soon.
