The Great Rock News Report 05.21.08
Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 05.21.2008

My girl Ashlee Simpson got married over the weekend to Fall Out Boy bassist and general media whore, Pete Wentz. And while you and I know that Ash has made a big mistake, it's only a matter of time before she realizes the error of her ways and becomes Mrs. Great Rock News Report. Still, congratulations to the both of them, not just on their marriage but their pregnancy. And I think a fitting way to celebrate the joys of their marriage would be to feature some oh-so rocking A-Simp and FOB music videos! No? Tough shit, it's my news report! But to make up for it, I'll allow you, the readers, to select some videos to feature in next week's news report. Why? Because I like to see as many comments as possible on my news reports, thanks.

So let's kick this post-wedding party off with a track from Ashlee's latest album, Bittersweet World...

"Bittersweet World" - Ashlee Simpson

Now then, on with the news and remember, there's two reports up. I'll link the other one at the end of this one.

Metallica Getting Closer To Completing "Dynamic" New Album

Metallica is "a couple of nips and tucks" away from completing its next album, which is still on target for a September release, according to drummer Lars Ulrich.

During a conference call last week promoting this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival, which Metallica will headline on June 13, Ulrich told reporters that the group hopes to wrap up work on the album in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. Metallica recently met with a graphic designer to begin planning the package, though there's no confirmed title for the album yet and the songs still have working names.

"We sort of promised ourselves that unlike all the records we made in the '90s, [which] were just completely stressed-out and just nutty, that we were gonna try and have a little more sane environment -- and we've actually, surprising mostly to ourselves, been able to keep to that," Ulrich said. "We've pretty much finished the music now, so all the next level stuff is just starting to go down."

Ulrich said Metallica came into the project with 26 songs, which were knocked down to 14 when the group started working with producer Rick Rubin. There are now 11 slated for the album, though Ulrich said "length issues" might mean one more has to be eliminated.

"These are long songs ... we're talking seven-minute, eight-minute, nine-minute nutty-ass songs," Ulrich revealed. "We don't make them long or short on purpose; you just kind of do what feels natural. We're not really gonna edit them, (so) we're gonna lose another one at some point in the next month or so and probably end up with 10."

Ulrich described the material as "definitely pretty all over the place. There's a lot of variation, a lot of fast, slow, melodic ... kind of hardcore, nutty super-fast speed stuff. It's a little more like how some of the earlier records were a little more dynamic within the songs."

Heaven And Hell Plan New Releases

Heaven and Hell has announced a new box set and new details on their upcoming album, which will be the first one with the current lineup in 16 years.

Vocalist Ronnie James Dio, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Vinny Appice reunited a few years ago as Heaven and Hell and have been successfully touring the world. Now, the band looks to the future with a few upcoming releases.

The first is a box set, scheduled for release on July 22nd, which will feature all three of the band's studio releases (Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer) and their double live collection Live Evil, which will each be remastered for the first time. The set comes packaged in a deluxe slipcase with extensive liner notes featuring all new interviews with the band. The retail suggested price is $54.98, with the digital version selling for a suggested price of $24.99.

Heaven and Hell also announced that they have entered the studio to record a new album, scheduled to be released in early 2009. During that time, the band will be a part of Metal Masters Tour, a month-long North American trek with Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Testament. The tour starts on August 6th in Camden, NJ.

Billie Joe Armstrong Talks Hot Tubs

Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong has spoken for the first time about the bands new side-project, the Foxboro Hot Tubs.

In a message on the group's website, Armstrong, writing under his Reverend Strychnine Twitch pseudonym, said initial live shows had gone better than expected.

"Pabst was flowin and everyone on some serious octane, baby! Now we jump in the jet to JW's hometown called Little Rock," Armstrong wrote.

"But when the Tubbies hit the scene, it's gonna be called ‘A Lotta Rock'. That's what I'm talkin 'bout."

He said that people coming to see the band on their remaining dates should "get all dressed up, come get down, wave your freak flag with the Foxboro Hot Tubs! Sting!!!!"

Van Halen Filming For Upcoming Live Release

Van Halen will be filming select dates of their current tour and the footage will then be released in an upcoming live DVD. Last week's gig at the Izod Center, East Rutherford, New Jersey, was the first show to be filmed for the release, according to vocalist David Lee Roth.

In other Van Halen news, Eddie Van Halen recently revealed that he feels "excellent" following a health scare in March of this year. The details of the scare were never revealed to public, but Eddie says;

"I feel excellent. I'm healthier than I've ever been. It's wonderful."

Well that's good to hear, in regards to both the release of an upcoming live DVD and of course, Eddie Van Halen's health.

Dave Grohl Addresses "Open Letter" To Metallica

Dave Grohl claimed on his website that the message to Metallica that was reported to be an "open letter" was in fact just a section of an interview blown out of proportion.

"Just wanted to write a quick note to clear up this whole "Open letter to Metallica" fiasco......For the record, I never "wrote" anything to Metallica. I was asked by a journalist, at the end of a long interview (abut the Foo Fighters) to give a quick message to Metallica in the studio. So, I rattled that quote off the top of my head. No biggie, right? Somehow it became my "open letter" to the band, and now it's been picked up by everyone from Blabbermouth to Rolling Stone (as if anyone really cares!). Now, it's true that I've been a loyal fan of this band for 25 years, and I can't wait to hear the new shit, but an "open letter" to the band?!!?? Nah. Not my style. I'd rather just text ‘em."

It doesn't make much difference what context it was said in because the sentiment was still the same; recent Metallica material has been fucking shit, so get it right this time, eh, lads?

My Chemical Romance Reveal Details of Upcoming Live CD/DVD

As I reported last week, MCR will be taking a year-long break to write and record the follow up to 2006's The Black Parade, but first they will release their second live DVD on June 29th.

My Chemical Romance will release a live DVD and CD package next month entitled The Black Parade Is Dead. The DVD comprises of footage from the bands shows in Mexico City and New Jersey last October.

A limited edition of the DVD will come in a pinewood coffin box that will be accompanied by a hand-painted Day of the Dead mask designed by the group's members. Each limited edition DVD will be certified with a Death Certificate of Authenticity.

All of that won't serve to get the right wing British newspapers off of the band's back following the suicide of a 13-year old girl recently.

Mikey Way, the band's bassist, said that the DVD captured two of the "most memorable" shows from their Black Parade world tour. "The kids at the Mexico City show actually overpowered the PA, and their voices were deafening," he said. "The Maxwell's show was complete pandemonium, and the video captures the feeling of and old school MCR show, the way it was way back when."

So here's another one worth purchasing. MCR's live shows are a perfect fit for a DVD because the theatrics and grandeur are off the charts when they're donning the Black Parade get up.

Led Zeppelin Plan To Play 4 Dates In August

Music Music claims a reliable source said that Led Zeppelin has four dates planned in North America. Here is their report: Everyone knows about Led Zeppelin's reunion show in London, UK this past December. Naturally, it was both magical and nostalgic. And a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity, right? Maybe not.

So NME confirmed late last year that Led Zeppelin had plans to go on tour sometime in 2008. Well, a reliable source just gave me a scoop on some Toronto dates. Apparently these dates will be announced shortly...but now you know.

No fancy tour of the U.S., but Toronto will have four dates at Skydome/Rogers Centre this coming August. Amazing. Hardly any bands play Skydome anymore because it's such a juggernaut of a venue and impossible to fill unless you're, well, Led Zeppelin.

The MCRmy Plan March of Protest

My Chemical Romance fans are planning to march across London in protest against the depiction of the band in the media.

The march, to be held on May 31, will begin at Hyde Park's West Pond and end outside the offices of The Daily Mail.

The newspaper has recently dubbed My Chemical Romance a 'suicide cult' band in its coverage of the suicide of 13-year-old emo Hannah Bond.

Three hundred fans are so far confirmed to march against the British press, of which the organisers from the MCR Buzznet Community in a statement claim The Daily Mail is the 'worst offender'.

In 2006, the newspaper widely criticized emo and My Chemical Romance and has recently run general pieces about the dangers of the 'cult'.

While I certainly commend these guys trying to defend the band, is 300 guys and gals wearing eyeliner, wristbands and skinny jeans really going to stop them being labeled a cult?

New Guns N Roses CD On The Way…

…But it's not Chinese Democracy.

Guns N Roses are set to re-release their Greatest Hits effort on June 2nd.

It's the first of two albums the band are expected to release this year, the second being their long-awaited new studio album Chinese Democracy.

That phrase "long-awaited" gets the award for understatement of the century.

The tracklisting for the band's greatest hits is:
Welcome To The Jungle
Sweet Child O' Mine
Patience
Paradise City
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Civil War
You Could Be Mine
Don't Cry (Original)
November Rain
Live And Let Die
Yesterdays
Ain't It Fun
Since I Don't Have You
Sympathy For The Devil

Supergroup Man Raze Set To Release Debut

Man Raze, a newly formed rock outfit featuring Phil Collen of Def Leppard, Simon Laffy from Girl and Paul Cook of The Sex Pistols, have announced the release of their full-length album "Surreal" on June 3, 2008 via VH1 Classic Records.

Recently, Man Raze filmed a private show in Los Angeles that will premiere on VH1 Classic.com later this year. The band plans to launch a U.S. tour in 2008. "The fun part about Man Raze is that musically we can go off in any direction from rock to alternative the next," said Phil Collen. We are looking forward to playing live this fall."

Apparently most tracks off the album are already available in various places around the net although I am yet to hear any myself.

Within Temptation Preparing New Live DVD

Within Temptation recently issued the following statement on their website, revealing plans for a live DVD to be released in September;

"In September, we will be releasing a new live DVD which will include our concert at the Ahoy with the Metropole Orchestra. We just finished the audio mix and are working on the video editing as we are typing this. The footage really looks amazing; we still can't believe how great this evening was and how great it was documented by all the cameras. More information about this will follow soon!"

And that folks, is good news all round. Within Temptation live is a great experience and one that deserves to be put on DVD, and now it will be. The set will feature footage from the band's show at the Black Symphony event at Ahoy in Rotterdam, Netherlands in February.

The band were backed by a 60-piece Metropole Orchestra and a 35-voice classical choir in a spectacular stage setting, backed by Europe's largest video screen (400 sqm).

This sounds like it could well be an epic piece, and if I were in the habit of forming shopping lists, this would most certainly be on it.

"This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" - Fall Out Boy

News About Hoes & Emos

  • Paris Hilton has apparently revealed that she and new flame Benji Madden have already talked about marriage. The socialite told People.com: "He wants to [get hitched]."

She added: "We talk about it." The blonde heiress - who is only thought to have been dating Benji for a couple of months - apparently said she'd like to wear a "beautiful white dress" when she does tie the knot.

She said the 29-year-old is "very down to earth", adding: "He's worked very hard on his own. He really has a heart of gold. He'd never do anything to hurt me. He loves and supports me no matter what. He's a really great person."

  • They signed a pre-nup! Pete Wentz has revealed that he and new wife Ashlee Simpson signed a pre-nuptial agreement before their wedding on Saturday. Wentz also said that Simpson has legally adopted his last name but he is unsure if she will use it in her singing career.

"She legally is a Wentz ... I don't know what she'll do with her stage name, that's up to her. She hasn't decided that," he said.

He also said that the pair have not yet embarked on their honeymoon and says they have been hanging out in their basement eating pizza.

"We got some blow-up palm trees. A little fake-n-bake tanning booth. We're eating DiGiorno's pizza, getting in that tanning oven every once in a while, it's great. It's gonna look like we're on that private jet. We're gonna save that 30 grand, you know?"

Simpson is reportedly four months pregnant with the couple's first child and when asked why Wentz and Simpson chose to wed, the Fall Out Boy bassist said:

It's been something we've been planning for a long time. I gave her a promise ring four months ago. Ryan, this baby has not been confirmed," he said. "The only thing I'm confirming now is that we're in the basement on our honeymoon with these blow-up palm trees."

  • Ashlee Simpson will be honeymooning in music venues across the US next month;

June 9 - Chicago, IL @ House of Blues
June 11 - Cleveland, OH @ House of Blues
June 12 - Sterling Heights, MI @ Freedom Hill Amphitheatre
June 16 - Myrtle Beach, SC @ House of Blues
June 18 - Orlando, FL @ House of Blues
June 22 - Jacksonville, FL @ Florida Theatre
June 24 - New York, NY @ The Fillmore
June 27 - Hyannis, MA @ Cape Cod Medley Tent
June 28 - Wildwood, NJ @ Wildwood Convention Center
July 1 - Westbury, NY @ Capital One Bank Theatre

Come on, girl, no UK dates? How am I meant to get my A-Simp fix when you won't come across the pond?

And I am done for another week. If you've got some free time, go check out some of the reviews I put up this week as well as all the other good stuff around 411. I'll be back next week with more news and more tour dates, so until then!

Does anybody remember when Ozzfest used to be good? Neither can I....

"It doesn't make much difference what context it was said in because the sentiment was still the same; recent Metallica material has been fucking shit, so get it right this time, eh, lads?" Dave Grohl did not say this and boo to the editor for allowing a writer to post something like this in the context of Grohl saying it.

The new VH stuff is sweet. Nice to see that Dave is sober-saw him last year & he kicked ass. Now maybe they can dig in the archives & break out some old live stuff, cuz it's a bitch to find(damn bootleggers).
P.S.-Nothing against Wolfie, but Mike Anthony was the secret weapon.
