Dancing About Architecture 06.10.08
Posted by Ian Wright on 06.10.2008

The bit at the start

Hello. As ever I'm running late. Go time.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

The Tallest Man On Earth – Shallow Graves

Remarkable country folk from Swedish Dylan soundalike.

You news, you lose

Insert title of album here.

Brendan Canning's solo album leaked a couple of weeks ago well ahead of its scheduled release date of July 22nd on Arts & Crafts. It's an unmastered version of it but even in that rougher state I've got no compunction about declaring it to be the best Broken Social Scene release since You Forgot It In People.

Canning is understandably perturbed by this and has taken steps to combat things. Namely he's released the full version of the album digitally.

Posting on his label's website Canning wrote:

It has come to my attention that an unmastered version of my album has been leaked through the internet. With the retail release being six weeks away, I've decided to correct the situation by releasing the album digitally myself, because I can. So this is for all you early birds who just couldn't wait for July 22nd. But you know, it won't be like going to your favorite record shop and getting a copy in your hot little hands, or sitting in your basement downloading it to your iTouch phone [sic] while playing 'Grand Theft Auto'. It merely corrects the situation that is...a messed up version of my record floating around on the internet, and this is not how I wanted my record to drop. Believe me, this is not a minor situation. We're talking recall here folks... With all of this in mind, please note: Something for All of Us... will be available at all fine retail and digital outlets in North America July 22nd with some additional artwork inside and slightly later for the rest of the world.

Thank you all, please enjoy.

BC

Those so inclined can buy the record digitally here.

More misfortune.

Why?'s (that right there played all sorts of havoc with my spell check function) Alopecia is one of the best albums I've heard all year and if their gig in Dublin a couple of months back is anything to go by they're a brilliant live band too. On top of that Yoni, Doug and Josiah are all really nice dudes too.

So why (ha!) do bad things happen to good people that are in good bands.

Yoni Wolf broke his hand when playing in Copenhagen which subsequently required an operation. On top of that he caught a case of the dangerous-when-you're-an-adult mumps which laid him up for 5 days resulting in the cancellation of dates in Scandinavia and Germany. Then when things cleared up with Yoni his brother Josiah went down with a case of the same illness.

This has meant that a load of dates in the UK have had to be cancelled.

However there is light at the end of the tunnel because a number of those dates have been rescheduled as follows:

29.06. MADAME JOJOS London (UK) RESCHEDULED & SOLD OUT
30.06. CARGO London (UK)
01.07. AUDIO Brighton (UK) VENUE CHANGE !
02.07. BODEGA Nottingham (UK) RESCHEDULED !
03.07. FAVERSHAM Leeds (UK) RESCHEDULED !
04.07. ROADHOUSE Manchester RESCHEDULED !
05.07. WIRELESS @ HYDE PARK London (UK)

Fingers crossed there's no other problems.

I love puns.

Remember Record Store Day? I was on about it a few weeks ago when loads of record stores around the world, but mainly in North America came together on April 19th for a Saturday of sales and in store performances in an effort to remind everyone that you can get music in places other than on the internet. Though sometimes you actually have to pay for it.

Well this July 4th is Independents Day (again, HA). Like record store day it's a global series of events and some of the more significant ones includes a number of online charity auctions, a digital only US compilation and a 2 disc UK comp. that will be available on CD, vinyl and digital formats.

At present only the first disc of the UK covers compilation has been announced an features songs by the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Beth Ditto, Devendra Banhart, the Futureheads, Maxïmo Park, José González, Prodigy, Editors, and British Sea Power. The second disc "will showcase new bands who have been personally recommended by those artists featuring on the first [disc]."

The US comp., curated by The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), will feature rare and previously unreleased tracks from Frank Black, Living Legends, Ani DiFranco and Slipknot amongst others. So it sound like the UK one is the one to get.

The online acutions will feature lots of memorabilia, signed merchandise, "once-in-a-lifetime opportunities" such as a search through New York City for rare records with DJ Spooky, a trumpet lesson from Ozomatli, and being an MTV VJ for a day. Radiohead, Kim Deal, Thom Yorke, Cat Power, Interpol, the New Pornographers, Arctic Monkeys, Quasimoto, Vampire Weekend, Paul Weller, and Beirut's Zach Condon are also donating items. The UK auction begins on June 9, while the U.S. one doesn't fire up until July 4.

Proceeds from the auctions and compilations will be split between a variety of organizations, including A2IM, the Worldwide Independent Network, MusiCares, the Musicians Benevolent Fund, and the Campaign Against Living Miserably.

Independents Day 08 [UK compilation]:

Disc one:

01 Editors: "Bonny"
02 Feeder: "Public Image"
03 Maxïmo Park: "Was There Anything I Can Do?"
04 Prodigy: "Ghost Town"
05 Cribs: "Bastards of Young"
06 José González: "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
07 The Futureheads: "With Every Heartbeat"
08 Jack Peñate: "Dub Be Good to Me"
09 Rodrigo y Gabriela: "Orion"
10 British Sea Power: "Tug Boat"
11 The Charlatans: "Murder"
12 Jarvis Cocker and Beth Ditto: "Temptation"
13 Devendra Banhart: "Don't Look Back in Anger"
14 Infadels: "Steady as She Goes"

Does your city fart?

I‘ve said it before but I'll say it again, you lucky lucky Chicagoans. Not only do you get the eminently affordable Pitchfork Fest on your doorstep but in conjunction with it there's a whole bunch of free lunchtime gigs happening in the coming months.

The dates are a co-endeavour between PitchforkMedia.com and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

All shows start at 12:15 and considering some of the names booked I'd advise getting there early for them.

06-16 Bird Names (presented by Bottom Lounge)
06-23 Gary Higgins (presented by The Abbey)
06-30 Killer Whales (presented by mP Productions)
07-07 Le Loup (presented by Schubas)
07-28 Bill Callahan (presented by JAM Productions)
08-04 Tortoise (presented by The Hideout)
08-11 TBA
08-18 The Ex with Getatchew Mekuria (presented by Empty Bottle)
08-25 Habib Koité & Bamada (presented by Martyrs')

This is all well and good but what I'm really waiting for is the Okkervil River/Charles Bissell of the Wrens split single.

Coming soon from White Whale records …

Handsome Furs

and Adam Franklin from Swervedriver

together at last, on 7"

covering each others tunes.

Well kinda, Handsome Furs will be covering an as yet undetermined Swervedriver song. Franklin will be covering "Shine A Light", a song by the Furs' Dan Boeckner which he wrote as part of Wolf Parade. The split is due in the summer on coloured vinyl early in the summer though you can grab Franklin's song in iTunes right now.

The YouTube video of the week

Back when I was 8 this was the greatest video on earth.

If you can you should go to these gigs.
