The Great Rock News Report 07.16.08
Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 07.16.2008
There's big tour news this week as Fall Out Boy, The Who, Nightwish, Children of Bodom and Bullet For My Valentine announce new dates! I also have track-by-tack insight into the new Slipknot album, and album updates from My Morning Jacket, Staind, AC/DC, Saliva, Lostprophets, The Police, Cold War Kids, Plain White T's and much more, inside!
First thing's first, (as if first things could be anything else), apologies for the lateness. I went out with my Dad last night to celebrate his birthday and we stopped out longer than expect, and needless to say I was in no condition to complete this news report last night. That does of course mean I'm doing all this with a hangover, but I bring these things on myself.
All that does mean is that we're working with just the bare minimum this week, but that's what you come here for anyway: the news. And there's plenty of it, as well as countless tour dates as usual.
As it happens, I am thinking of a complete overhaul look-wise for the report so expect some changes in the next few weeks.
Now then, onto the news.
My Morning Jacket Already Working On Evil Urges Follow Up
Despite releasing their fifth album, Evil Urges, last month, My Morning Jacket have already begun work on its follow-up. Frontman Jim James has revealed that he was in the process of writing what will be the band's sixth studio album.
"I'm already writing songs for the new record and stuff," he said. "The process is weird because whenever we make a record, the songs come from one or two years of life that you've lived. Then by the time you get to make that record you're in that zone but when it comes out, it's a year or two later. So, for me personally, I'm working on the next thing."
Slipknot Reveal All Hope Is Gone Album Art
Last week it was the tracklisting, and this week it's the album cover. For those who haven't seen it yet, here it is:
Nothing spectacular, but then again it is Slipknot. There's a ton of hype around this album making it probably the most heavily anticipated rock album of the year. The album is currently being mixed in the UK by Colin Richardson who has worked with Machine Head and Trivium amongst others. It was produced by the band and Dave Fortman who has worked with Mudvayne, Simple Plan, Evanescence and more. All Hope Is Gone will be released through Roadrunner on August 26. "It's very reminiscent of Slipknot in '99," Shawn "The Clown" Crahan said in a recent interview, "A lot of the imagery connected with this album harks back to our first album."
Corey Taylor recently spoke of each individual track in an interview. Here's a brief summary of each track.
Execute: ..."[It] came about 10 years ago. Clown pulled up this speech by former US Vice President Spiro Agnew and that's what we wanted to use as an into. I played it for Clown and he was like "That's cool, but wouldn'it it be better if you took it and made your own deal about it?" So I did."
Gematria (The Killing Name): "I love my country and the people that defend it. I love the people that still exercise their right to disagree and voice their discontent, but there are a lot of people who are disguising politics as religion and dictating taste and thurning it into policy. And that hurts me."
Sulfur: "It's kind of a reflection of where I am at the moment. I probably feel the best I've ever felt in years, not just health-wise but as a person."
Psychosocial: "It's got that Rammstein/Ministry edge to it. Lyrically, it's very much about us, and the energy we use when we're together and the fact that we can pull it off when we're focused."
Dead Memories: "It's the story of my last 10 years. I've been holding on to these things for such a long time, I decided it's just time to let them go."
Vendetta: "...basically my way of introducing myself back to the world, and looking around and going "wow!" I never really take credit for the stuff, but there are a lot of people out there who've been inspired by what we do."
Butcher's Hook: "It's about all those little emo boys with their sweet little haircuts and their girldfriend's pants. People give us shit for wearing outfits, but all those guys look exactly the same."
Gehenna: "It deals with obsession and wanting to let go of the facade and being your true self, as montrous as it may seem."
This Cold Black: "It calls people to the carpet on all types of shit. And I don't think people are doing that anymore, and if they are it's in such a weak way."
Wherein Lies Continue: "It's a dressing down of the world as we know it. It all comes down to the fact that we have to save ourselves."
Snuff: "This is the slow one. It's about someone who helped me through a lot and I thought she felt the same way I did and then she let me down."
All Hope Is Gone: "A lot of people look at this in a very negative way. This track is a reflection of what Slipknot is. Just when you thought you had us figured out, give up all hope because you're never, ever going to."

Trigger The Bloodshed have revealed a new line up. ""Firstly we have parted ways with our vocalist Charlie Holmes. It is sad to see him go as he is a good friend and we are happy to say there is no ill feeling between him and the rest of the band. The good news is that we finally have a full lineup, including new vocalist Jonny Burgan, and keeping it in the family, our new bassist is Rob's younger brother Dave Purnell, who is no stranger to the band — you may have seen him playing with us at Download. Jonny and Dave live and breathe extreme music and are both bringing a lot to the table in terms of musicianship. We all feel that this is the strongest the band has ever been and with a solid lineup we are set to take no prisoners across the summer and later this year on tour."
I Am Ghost have emerged from self-imposed songwriting solitude to begin work on their sophomore album, which is slated for release this fall via Epitaph Records.
