Dancing About Architecture 08.19.08
Posted by Ian Wright on 08.19.2008

The bit at the start

Happy Tuesday to you. I'm a bit busy building an ark to deal with all the fucking rain we've been having over the course of the last 10 days so lets get right to it.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Is on holiday this week, go for a nice long walk.

You news, you lose

Damn those filthy commie Canucks.

One of the great things about being Canadian and in the arts is that there's all sorts of groovy grants which the government hand out that you can apply for, this includes monies to support you performing abroad if the tour (be it ballet, theatre or indie rock) can't actually support itself.

At least, that used to be one of the groovy things about it. The well is about to dry up and apparently it's Holy Fuck's fault. From March of next year PromArt (who are the touring subsidy people) will have it's funding cut. According to CBC news, the body receives "about CDN$4.7 million a year and supports hundreds of different arts groups, from ballet and theatre companies performing overseas to author readings out of country."

CBC also quotes the Canadian PM's Press Secretary Kory Teneycke as saying, The [funding] choices made were inappropriate...because they were ideological in some cases, or the money was going to fringe arts groups that, in many cases, would be at best, unrepresentative, and at worst, offensive." Holy Fuck in particular were singled out as one of those groups by a spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs minister.

Speaking on CBC's cultural affairs radio show "Q" Holy Fuck's bassist Matt McQuaid opened his flappy little mouth and said "I guess more than anything it's a little bit annoying that we've been made the scapegoat when you consider how much money we receive relative to the budget for the entire program. I think our funding comes in at something less than 0.1 per cent of the whole program. So all of these other larger groups who need money more than we do to travel abroad-- like ballet and symphonies-- we become the scapegoat for the cutting in their funding."

PromArt isn't the only arts programme the government beancounters have set their beady little eyes on as Trade Routes, a $9 fund "which helps promote cultural exports abroad," also faces the axe.

Quick Man Man news.

Philly's finest are set to release a new 7" single via Obey Your Brain. It'll have "Little Torments" on the A-Side and "Snakehandling the Moon Sault Kick Comeback" on the flip side.

No idea what the release date is.

Times New EP.

Columbus, Ohio's scuzziest sounding 3-piece, Times New Viking are set to release a brand new EP on October 21st via Matador.

Stay Awake will be available via download and 7" will feature 5 new songs and artwork by the band's keyboardist/vocalist/indie pinup Beth Murphy.

Tracklisting:

A:

01 Call & Respond
02 Pagan Eyes
03 Hate Hate Hate

B:

01 No Sympathy
02 Sick & Tyred

Weezer are terrible these days.

But if you want to be in their next video then if you're in or around LA on Thursday then you might be in luck. The band are shooting a promo for "Troublemaker" and are looking for volunteers. If you're interested then email weezervideo@gmail.com and see what happens.

Setting Standards

Tortoise's 4th album Standards, unavailable in the format for the past 3 or so years is set to be reissued on vinyl on September 9th. Thrill Jockey will issue a special 1,000 copy only pressing on red vinyl that will come with a heavy-duty silkscreened PVC sleeve and an "artworked" inner sleeve, and includes a download for an MP3 copy of the record. It's available now on the label's site.

The YouTube video of the week

There's a new Star Wars film out.

A short time ago in a galaxy pretty damn close ...

I'd have been impossibly excited about all this
but such is the giantness of the ass raping that Lucas
has given my childhood over the past decade
I now couldn't give a fuck.

That being said this piece of music still gets me every time.

If you can you should go to these gigs.
