Joe's Jams 09.22.08: Top Classic Rock Songs - #200-#151
Posted by Joe Rivett on 09.22.2008
The next couple weeks I'll be giving my list of the top 200 classic rock songs that I like...
Disclaimer
- I came up with this list based on what I would listen to if two songs were on the radio. This list is not what I think are the most impressive songs, it is simply what I would pick.
- I don't include Metallica as they would really flood the list and I'm not sure I want to label them classic rock.
- I consider the Beatles to be Oldies.
- My hope is that you don't own all of these songs and will try downloading some which is really the purpose of all of my columns.
200. Donny Iris: Ah Leah – This song makes you want Leah, whoever she is.
199. CSN: Love the One You're With – This band just had great harmonies.
198. Santana: Everybody's Everything – An overlooked jazzy rock tune.
197. ACDC: Dirty Deeds – Sounds like TNT but better.
196. Who: Behind Blue Eyes – Fred Durst did the worst cover ever to this song.
195. Cream: Sunshine of Your Love – This song has amazing bass.
194. Foghat: Slow Ride – One of those songs you have to play at a 4th of July BBQ
193. Kansas: Carry On Wayward Son – A fun song to sing a long with.
192. CCR: Have You Ever Seen the Rain – Not as good as "Who'll stop the rain" but solid.
191. Styx: Grand Illusion – I love how powerful the beginning is.

189. Eddie Money: Two Tickets to Paradise – Admit it, you love this song.
188. ACDC: You Shook Me All Night Long – It wasn't a school dance without this song.
187. Def Leppard: Love Bites – The range of the lead singer is impressive.
186. Alice Cooper: Poison – I found this song on my Monsters of Rock album and I wonder why I never hear it on radio.
185. Foreigner: Waiting for a Girl Like You – A relaxing song with great vocals.
184. Aerosmith: Walkin on Sand – Great cover of an oldie, it is amazing that Steven Tyler can still sing.
183. U2: New Years Day – I love the piano melody.
182. Alice Cooper: Schools Out – I blasted this song at the end of every school year.
181. ACDC: Big Balls – Everyone loves a double entendre.
180. Aerosmith: Last Child – He uses the line "sassy frassy" in this song.
179. Motley Crue: Kick-start My Heart – My favorite band in second grade.
178. Black Sabbath: The Wizard – Heavy metal with a harmonica.
177. Tom Petty: Refugee – Tom Petty doesn't have a lot of great songs but every song is solid including this one.

175. Firefall: You are the Woman – I biased toward songs with flutes

173. Doobie Brothers: Long Train Running – Very catchy guitar melody.
172. Jethro Tull: Skating Away – Ian Anderson has an amazing voice.

170. ELO: Fire on High – People who have never heard this song love it when they hear it.
169. Queen: Somebody to Love – RIP Freddy.
168. Allman Brothers Band: Midnight Rider – A great country song that somehow is considered rock.
167. Elton John: Your Song – "How wonderful life is while you're in the world."
166. Queen: Bicycle Race – It is a silly song but fun.
165. CSN: Teach the Children Well – Another great country song that is considered rock.
164. Journey: Wheel in the Sky – I'm not crazy about Journey but this song rocks.
163. Cars: Moving in Stereo – Forget "Just What I Needed," this is their best song.
162. Eagles: Life in the Fast Lane – Don Henley has an amazing voice.
161. Kiss: Detroit Rock City – This song gives me energy.
160. Steely Dan: Back Jack Do It Again – He sounds like Carlos Santana in this song.
159. Bob Seger: Hollywood Nights – This song makes me want to drive fast.
158. Jethro Tull: Minstrel in the Gallery – Like I said, I am biased toward flutes.
157. Def Leppard: Photograph – Any song about Marilyn Monroe is good.
156. Who: Who Are You – One of the catchiest choruses
155. Fleetwood Mac: Go Your Own Way – The only Fleetwood Mac song I can tolerate.
154. Red Rider: Lunatic Fringe – The intro of this song is cool.
153. Pretenders: Back in the Chain Gang – One of the best female voices in Rock history.
152. Emerson Lake and Palmer - Karn Evil – This song features a hell of a keyboard part.
151. CCR: Susie Q – CCR is great for making simple songs sound great.

Hollywood Nights is an excellent pick. The reason it is so driving is because they recorded two separate drum tracks.
Tom Waits would be a good idea, as would Warren Zevon cut ("Excitable Boy" "Lawyers, Guns & Money") and maybe a passing Jackson Browne reference ("Doctor, My Eyes" or "Fountain of Sorrow")
