Sonic Youth, and then some more Sonic Youth, Mogwai health problems, KEXP compilations and The Magnetic Fields.
The bit at the start
There's really only one thing I want to talk about this week and that's ATP New York. Looking at the pictures of it on Pitchfork today I'm so hugely jealous of anyone who got to see that most stellar of lineup take place. I do know one guy who was there but he's not back yet so if anyone reading was there and wants to say how good it was/gloat then there's a comment box at the bottom.
Thurston Moore doing Psychic Hearts in full. Aww wow.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Stars Of The Lid – The Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid
An astonishingly beautiful ambient collection.
You news, you lose
Shame.
On the subject of ATP NY Mogwai's drummer Martin Bulloch was hospitalised due to complications arising from an ongoing heart condition. Bulloch was subsequently discharged but was urged by doctors to return home to Glasgow for additional treatment.
Obviously it's good news that Bulloch is ok, or at least okish but the incident has caused the cancellation of the remainder of Mogwai's North American tour with Fuck Buttons and a number of Europena dates. Those dates affected are as follows:
09-22 Boston, MA - Wilbur Theatre
09-23 Montreal, Quebec - Metropolis
09-25 Pontiac, MI - Crofoot
09-26 Chicago, IL - Congress Theatre
09-27 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue
10-21 Edinburgh, Scotland - Corn Exchange
10-23 Manchester, England - Academy
10-24 London, England - Hammersmith Apollo
10-27 Luxembourg, Luxembourg - Rockhal
10-28 Paris, France - Casino de Paris
10-29 Cologne, Germany - Live Music Hall
11-02 Copenhagen, Denmark - Vega
11-03 Lund, Sweden - Mejeriet
11-04 Stockholm, Sweden - Cirkus
11-06 Berlin, Germany - Huxleys
11-08 Hamburg, Germany - Grosse Freiheit
11-10 Frankfurt, Germany - Mousonturm
11-11 Dresden, Germany - Alter Schlachthof
11-12 Munich, Germany - Backstage-Werk
11-14 Vienna, Austria - Wuk
11-17 Fribourg, Switzerland - Fri Son
11-18 Zurich, Switzerland - Rote Fabrik
On a related note Mogwai's new album is really rather good and Fuck Buttons' cover of "Mogwai Fear Satan" may be my favourite piece of music of they year.
Tenuous excuse to talk about Sonic Youth.
What.cd had a freeleech over the course of the weekend and I used the opportunity to grab all of Sonic Youth's SYR releases. I have their entire "proper" discography but have never heard any of those. I'm expecting an "interesting" few hours.
Anyway. Kim Gordon has always had pretty wide ranging interests in visual and aesthetic arts outside the band. Be it filmmaking, painting or fashion. And it's fashion that we're on this week because Gordon is launching a line of clothing with friends of hers.
The first item of clothing is "a military-style wool jacket inspired by Françoise Hardy," limited to a run of 50. And it's actually rather nice.
Um yeah, anyway. Sonic Youth, awesome.
KEXP comp.
Seattle indie radio powerhouse KEXP are to release their 4th annual comp of in studio performances this week. The comp features the likes of Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, British Sea Power and more. In fact, here's the full tracklisting:

06 The National: "Start a War"
07 Elbow: "Grounds for Divorce"
08 Angelique Kidjo: "Salala"
09 Yeasayer: "2080"
10 !!!: "Yadnus"
11 Fleet Foxes: "Oliver James"
12 Atmosphere: "Guarantees"

17 The Raveonettes: "Ali, Walk With Me"

19 Carter Tanton: "Red Balloons"
20 Rufus Wainwright: "Going to a Town"
More tenuous Sonic Youth stuff.
I'm sorry, I've got my telecaster tuned to something tuned to something really weird at the minute and I'm finally going to buy my Jaguar this week. I'm just in that sorta place right now.
Thurston Moore has co-produced the next record by Brooklyn psyche supergroup Religious Knives. The Door will be released on Moore's own Ecstatic Peace label on October 14th.
The other "co" part of that co-producing partnership is the members of the band which features members of Double Leopards and Mouthus.
Tracklisting:
01 Downstairs
02 Basement Watch
03 On a Drive
04 The Storm
05 Major Score
06 Decisions Are Made
More fashion?
Is there no decent news this week?
Well no, not really.
But here we are.
Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields is quite the cloths horse even though he's a pretty reticent rock star. In fact he's pretty reticent about everything but he does write a hell of a tune.
And from now on he'll have some awesome footwear. French shoemakers Bluedy have created a line of shoes inspired by the grumpy tunesmith. They look like this …
Errr, not quite my thing thanks. But they do look classy I guess.
Bluedy also have a line inspired by Jimi Hendrix. I'm not sure whether or not they burn on command, but would be awesome if they did.
Being For The Benefit Of The Bridge School
The lineup for this years' Bridge School Benefit (the 22nd in fact) in San Francisco is taking shape and as ever it's looking like an all star (if patchy in terms of quality) event. Joining the ubiquitous Neil Young is Death Cab for Cutie, Wilco, Cat Power, Smashing Pumpkins, ZZ Top, Norah Jones, Josh Groban, and Jack Johnson. Hopefully by the time the event takes place there'll be more than 3 acts worth seeing.
The Bridge School Benefit will take place at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on the weekend of October 25-26.
The YouTube video of the week
Not music but worth watching. Never piss off a clown.
If you can you should go to these gigs.
