The bit at the start
Hey, I normally only post one video per week in this column but I found this last week and it's too good to let go.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Colour Music
Wonderful Okie psyche-folk.
You news, you lose
Holy shit.
So in New York on Saturday there was a little bit of an Elephant 6 Recording Company show in the Knitting Factory. It featured performances from the likes of Elf Power and The Olivia Tremor Control.
Oh, and Jeff Mangum, "reclusive genius" Neutral Milk Hotel leader showed up and played on a couple of tunes. Mangum didn't play any NMH material but joined OTC on "The Opera House" and "I Have Been Floated" as well as Elf Power's "The Arrow Flies Close."
Despite that there was some NMH material aired on the night when ex band members Scott Spillane and Julian Koster played "The Fool" from In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, an instrumental piece that Spillane wrote.
The gig was part of the E6 Holiday Surprise Tour and features Koster, Spillane, Will Cullen Hart of Olivia Tremor Control, Laura Carter of Elf Power, Eric Harris of OTC and Circulatory System, and Nesey Gallons playing the songs of OTC and Elf Power as well as Circulatory System, the Music Tapes, and more. There's 11 dates left on the tour and don't be shocked if Mangum shows up at the Chicago and perhaps even the Kentucky shows. The rest of the dates are:
10-14 Portland, ME - Space Gallery
10-15 New Haven, CT - The Space
10-16 Purchase, NY - SUNY Purchase
10-17 Rochester, NY- The Bug Jar
10-18 Pittsburgh, PA - Brillobox
10-19 Columbus, OH - Wexner Center
10-20 Pontiac, MI - Crofoot Pike Room
10-21 Chicago, IL - Bottom Lounge
10-22 Bloomington, IN - Cinemat
10-23 Lexington, KY - University of Kentucky
10-25 New York, NY - Mercury Lounge (Music Tapes only, part of Merge Records' CMJ showcase)
WWHHHOOOOOOOOO.
Great news everyone.
There's a new Animal Collective album on the way. In January.

It's called Meriwether Past Pavilion.
It'll be available on CD, double vinyl and digital from Domino Records.

Whoo, listen to me again, I'm still on the Stereo. Ster E Oh ho.
So if you thought that the deluxe reissue of Pavement's Brighten The Corners couldn't get any more jam packed then maybe you should sit yourself down for a while. Coz I've got some news.
It's due out on November 18th but if you order it now from Matador's webstore you can avail of their "buy early get now" offer and be able to get a full stream of the album on October 10th, a bonus song on October 21st, and another on November 4th.
But there's more. On the day of the album's physical (re?) release the early birds will receive not only the afore mentioned and in their case paid for album but also a vinyl copy of Pavement's Live album. The album was recorded during the BTC tour and was intended to be released in July 1998 but it never appeared until now.

Malkmus seems like a nice dude and all but I don't really like his post Pavement material. The sooner his solo career flops completely and he gets on the reunion trail the better as far as I'm concerned.
Hmm.
Iceland, in case you haven't noticed is utterly and completely financially fucked. So worthless is their currency right now that yesterday I was on the verge of buying a luxury apartment in Reykjavik for ˆ1,300.
So now is obviously the time to release a charity single in aid of that country's environment. As opposed to maybe helping their people buy bread, that'd be dumb.
But that's precisely what Bjork and Thom Yorke are doing. "Nattura" will be released on One Little Indian on October 20th and Yorke guests on backing vocals on it.
The song "highlights a grass roots movement in Iceland to reclaim the country's natural resources and wilderness from the hands of big business and pollutio," and is, "more of a protest and rallying cry than a lecture."
Sounds great.
This isn't a popular thing to say but I really fucking hate Bjork's music.
Forever, orever, rever, ever, ver, er ,r.
On the subject of hating things I really hate iTunes too. But if you don't then you can buy a six song live EP from Montreal's Islands right now. The EP features mostly tunes from this year's disappointing Arm's Way as well as covers of Spiritualized's "Broken Heart" and Sinead O'Connor's "Red Football".
Tracklisting:
01 The Arm
02 Pieces of You
03 Creeper
04 Red Football
05 Broken Heart
06 J'aime Vous Voir Quitter (Revised Live Version)
My Morning Sickness
Last week at a gig in Iowa City (October 7th) Jim James of My Morning Jacket slipped and fell. As a result he had to cancel a gig at an Obama rally the following night as well as some other shows in Chicago that week.
According to The Gazette newspaper, "James slipped and fell about 30 minutes into the band's set at the [University of Iowa's] Recreation Building and was taken to a hospital. The remainder of the show was canceled..."
"James apparently hit his head in the fall, which happened in the dark between songs..."
"My Morning Jacket's four other members left the stage seconds after James fell. Drummer Patrick Hallahan returned to the stage several minutes later to say James fell and his injury was being assessed. About 10 minutes later, Hallahan and the rest of the band, minus James, took the stage to say the show was canceled."
"'Jim was really hurt. He's heading to the hospital,' Hallahan said. 'We're really sorry, this has never happened before.'"
The band's official statement on the subject reads ...
As some of you may have heard we had to cancel our show last evening in Iowa City. We were finishing up the last few bars of "Off the Record", and just like any other night we were all having a great time. Jim went to get closer to the audience on his side of the stage, and as he moved forward to step onto the sub-woofer the lights darkened, and he inadvertently stepped off the stage. Upon falling, he suffered traumatic injuries to his torso, and was immediately taken to the hospital. Per the doctor's orders, Jim will be off the road and recovering from his injuries for the next two to three weeks. Sadly, we must postpone the two shows in Chicago on Thursday and Friday until further notice.
For those who attended the Iowa City show, we would like to extend our gratitude for your understanding and cooperation. We take our fans and performances very seriously, and would never cancel a show unless it was absolutely necessary. Please know that we will be making every effort to return to your fine city.
Thank you so much to our fans for the kind sentiments and well-wishes on Jim's behalf. We hope for Jim's quick recovery and to be back out on the road soon.
With Love,
My Morning Jacket
Poor Jim, he's got the worst luck with his health.

The bit at the end
I'm going to a potentially deafening gig on Friday. Times New Viking and No age should be great. And Los Campesinos! should be decent too.
Semi permanent plug for my blog. More Mangum videos, Stars of the Lid film trailer, a review of one of the worst gigs I've ever been to and more.
