Dancing About Architecture 11.04.08
Posted by Ian Wright on 11.04.2008

The bit at the start

Hi, I've been away on my holidays. Events were really too numerous to recount in full here but if you're even semi interested in how I briefly met the guitarist in Patty Smith's band then there's always the blog link at the bottom of the column.

But what I will say here is that I've seen lots of bands play live in the past fortnight.

Some were really good.

Like Deerhoof, The Walkmen and Why?

Some were just good.

Like Retribution Gospel Choir, Experimental Dental School, Mirah and So Cow.

Some were alright.

Like Micah P. Hinson and Billy Bragg.

And some were bad.

Like Sun Lox and pretty much everyone on the Hotel Café all girl singer songwriter tour with the exception of Thao Nguyen, who is a very talented lady.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Built To Spill – Perfect From Now On

Seeing them play it in full on Monday. Can't wait.

You news, you lose

ATP ATP ATP.

We're still a good few months away from next May.

6 to be precise.

But the good people at ATP have already announced who will be curating their pair of May UK festival weekends, both of which will take place in Butlins Minehead in Sommerset which I think will be the first time that at least one of the May weekenders won't be taking place at Camber Sands.

Anyway, curators. Well for the first one it's potentially you. From May 8-10 it's ATP's The Fans Strike Back (complete with Star Wars style poster) and as with the ATP vs. The Fans event a couple of years ago half the bill will be selected by the ATP organisation and the other half will be selected by the attendees. ATP have already announced that Devo, Spititualized, Grails and the reunited Sleep (who will be performing Holy Mountain in full as well as selections from Dopesmoker). Voting for the fans portion of the lineup begins on November 17th and initially ATP is asking people to pick bands who have never played an ATP UK event. So that will be a vote for Wolf Parade and The Wrens from me then.

The second weekend, taking place from May 15-17 will be curated by The Breeders and they've already picked Bon Iver, Throwing Muses, Teenage Fanclub and Holy Fuck.

To be honest I'm unsure which one of hose sounds more tempting but then again there are still plenty of other names to be announced between now and May. I might fancy going back to Primavera in Barcelona next year. We'll see.

Cline vs. Cline.

One of my favourite guitarists is current Wilco plank spanker Nels Cline. Even though I don't much care for his work with that band (hated the last record) he's done some brilliant experimental work over the years, in particular an awesome album with Thurston Moore called Pillow Wand that I'm very fond of.

Cline has a twin brother named Alex and next February 10th the Cryptogramaphone label will put out records by both men. Nels' is called Coward and Alex's is Continuation.

Writing about similarities between the pair of albums label boss Jeff Gauthier said "Both albums were unintentionally recorded the same week. Both album titles are one word beginning with the letter C. The covers of both recordings were painted by women artists. Both albums make references to orchids. Both contain two pieces that are 18 minutes long. Both have one piece that is over 15 years old. Drones are featured in several pieces on both CDs. The original designs of both CD discs were (again, unintentionally) practically identical, although Nels' was changed because of this. And finally, Alex's CD is about seven minutes longer than Nels'. Not a coincidence, you say? Maybe not, unless you consider that Nels is about seven minutes older than Alex. OK, maybe that's stretching it a bit."

Tracklistings:

Coward:

01 Epiphyllum
02 Prayer Wheel
03 Thurston County
04 The Androgyne

12 Onan Suite IV. Interruption (Onan's Psychedelic Breakdown)
13 Onan Suite V. Seedcaster
14 Onan Suite VI. The Liberator

01 Nourishing our Roots
02 Clearing our Streams

05 SubMerge
06 On the Bones of the Homegoing Thunder
07 Open Hands (Receive, Release)

I think I've found a clue.

Montreal eh?

What's up with all the great bands coming from there in the past few years?

Like Arcade Fire and the Unicorns.

And what happens when you leave Arcade Fire after they made their debut, self-titled EP but before they made Funeral?

Or if you were the Unicorn that didn't go on to join Islands?

Well if you're Brendan Reed (ex-AF) and Alden Penner (former Unicorn) you form a new band called Clues with a few of your buddies. They've got an album due out on Constellation Records next April but you can listen to a song from it called "Perfect Fit" on this page.

I wonder what archaic music style he'll try to ape now.

Come next February (17th in the US, 16th in Europe) Pompeii Records will release a pair of EP's by it's owner.

Not interested yet?

That label boss is Zach Condon and those EP's (which come together in a single package but on 2 CD's) are the next Beirut releases. The first of them March Of The Zapotec features 6 songs recorded by the band in part in Mexico. The second disc, Holland is credited to Realpeople which was the name of Condon's early home recording project but will feature new songs.

Tracklistings:

Beirut: March of the Zapotec:

01 El Zocalo
02 La Llorna
03 My Wife
04 The Akara
05 On a Bayonet
06 The Shrew

I can't think of an appropriate headline.

But Silver Jews are all set to play 333 feet under the surface of the earth on January 31. The event takes place at McMinnville, Tennessee's Cumberland Caverns to play an afternoon "Bluegrass Underground" gig due for midnight broadcast on Nashville's WSM radio.

The gig is open to the public and the Jews will be on stage at 3 PM with an as yet unnamed opener playing an hour before.

DEEPER THAN DAVID BERMAN'S VOICE.

That's what I should have gone with.

And finally

Not content with releasing one of the best records of the year in Dear Science, TV On The Radio front-man Tunde Adebimpe is set to release his debut solo release.

Fake Male Voice as he's dubbing the project will release a 7" picture disc on HEARTFAST on December 23rd.

The 7" has "Cou Cou Sous Les Nuages" and the A-side and "OMG!!!FMV!!!" on the B. As well as the picture disc there's also an included DVD that featuring music videos Tunde made for both songs, plus one for a third song, "Lone Sum Humm".

Fake Male Voice 7":

A1 Cou Cou Sous Les Nuages
B1 OMG!!!FMV!!!

Fake Male Voice DVD:

Writing under the influence

Without which this column would not have been possible:

Talk Radio

The bit at the end

It happened why I was away so I won't go into it in detail. But HOLY SHIT! new Animal Collective and soon.

Bored of election now. It's over.

Semi permanent plug for my blog. Loads of gig reviews, some good MP3's the usual football bullshit.
