The Alternative Nation News Report 11.09.08: Now With Change You Can Believe In
Posted by Taylor Martin on 11.09.2008
It’s been a slow news week, but I dug up some news for all of you. Deftones’ bassist seriously injured, Genesis reunion with Peter Gabriel, Mos Def stole a camera, something about Amy Winehouse that is probably drug related, and Lil Wayne is dead (or not), and Guitar Hero/Rock Band DLC of the Week! YES WE DID! YES WE DID!
My god, what a slow news week. The election happened this week and it turned out the way I had hoped, so I guess it's not so bad. I just wish Sarah Palin would go away already, but it is kinda funny to hear about all of the infighting in the McCain campaign. If it wasn't for Rudy Giuliani's campaign strategy of ignoring every state in the primary until Florida, the McCain's would have been the worst run campaign this election.
But this column isn't about politics, it's about music. So here's some music news.
Headlines!
Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a serious car accident on Monday, leaving him in a coma. Frontman Chino Moreno had this to say about the situation: "It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident last night. He is currently in a Northern California hospital in serious, but stable condition. I am on my way up North right now to be by his side along with the rest of our band mates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this." The band has been hard at work on their new album, Eros, which is scheduled to be released sometime next year. Deftones have always been a favorite of mine because they're not afraid to take chances and be experimental, unlike many of their contemporaries. I hope that Chi makes a full recovery and the band can get back to recording soon.
Genesis have already reunited with Phil Collins but they still want to reunite with their original frontman, Peter Gabriel. The initial reunion was Gabriel's idea, as he wanted to perform the band's 1975 concept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. When they finally did reform, Gabriel decided to work on his solo album instead. This would be cool if it actually happened; Genesis with Peter Gabriel is way better than Genesis without Peter Gabriel. Sorry, Phil. It's true.
Rapper Mos Def apparently beat up a photographer, Volkel Correl, and stole his camera. He was charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor malicious destruction of property and a warrant was issued for his arrest. As talented as Mos Def is (not only as an artist, but an actor as well), he sure does do (and say) some stupid shit.
Quickies!
- Janet Jackson has canceled her tour. Whatever, I didn't even want to go see her anyway! *cry*
- Amy Winehouse blah blah blah hospital blah blah blah husband out of jail blah blah blah.
- Apparently, Lil Wayne was fake murdered last weekend. Police apprehended the fake killer, who pleaded fake not guilty and faces a hypothetical 25 years to life in prison or the fake death penalty.
- Noel Gallagher says that Oasis don't "consciously" steal music. Not long after this statement, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr killed the Gallagher brothers.
- Ozzy Osbourne was declared a "Living Legend" at some awards ceremony and when they say "living" I guess they mean it in the loosest terms possible.
- So, this one time, Pink had a crazy fucking Thanksgiving ‘cause she drank too much and she dumped sweet potatoes on her father-in-law's head and then she set her house on fire with a cigarette ‘cause she was too busy fucking her husband and then she cut her hand and fell in the pool. THAT SO PUNK RAWK OH EM GEE.
DLC of the Week
After thinking about it, I decided to include Guitar Hero: World Tour in this section because the guys at Activision have released a lot of DLC since launch and I didn't want to biased. Admittedly, I do not yet own World Tour but hopefully that will change pretty soon. With that said, let's see what's on tap this week.
Rock Band: Another full album is being released this week and it's a doozy. The Foo Fighters' 1997 album The Colour and the Shape will be available on November 11th for the Xbox 360 and November 13th for the PS3. Here's the tracklisting:
1. "Doll"
2. "Monkey Wrench"
3. "Hey, Johnny Park!"
4. "My Poor Brain"
5. "Wind Up"
6. "Up in Arms"
7. "My Hero"
8. "See You"
9. "Enough Space"
10. "February Stars"
11. "Walking After You"
12. "New Way Home"
"Everlong" will not be available for download as it is already in the game.
I've been waiting for this one ever since they announced it a few months ago. The Colour and the Shape is probably the Foos' best album and although I strongly recommend that you download the whole album, you should at least download "Monkey Wrench" and "My Hero".
Guitar Hero: There are six songs being released this week and they're all pretty awesome. On November 13th, three songs by Jimi Hendrix will be available for download. They are as follows:
"If 6 Was 9"
"Little Wing"
"Fire"
It goes without saying that I recommend all of these songs. "Fire" is kinda iffy because it's a live version, but it's fucking Hendrix, how could it be disappointing?
If that wasn't enough, the Smashing Pumpkins have a track pack of their own on November 15th:
"The Everlasting Gaze"
"1979"
"G.L.O.W."
It's a good set, but I really want "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" to be released eventually.
It's Over!
Like I said, it's been a slow week so I apologize for the short edition this week. I think I'm going to debut a new feature next week if I can think of one. I think I'll write some shit down on paper and just pick one at random. Something like that.
