Would you check out Plant-less Led Zeppelin? Nine Inch Nails gets new drummer. Guns N’ Roses parties. Chevelle, AFI, Down working on material. The Red ARG. Deftones, Mastodon ailing members’ update. Cornell gets release date. Mustaine dishes on Megadeth. Details on Music As A Weapon Tour. Listen to full streams of Mudvayne, David Cook.
Nine Inch Nails announced that drummer Ilan Rubin (Lostprophets, The New Regime) will serve as the replacement for drummer Josh Freese. Freese recently announced his plans to leave the group. Speaking on the addition, band frontman Trent Reznor had the following to say:
"With great pride and excitement I announce the addition of Ilan Rubin to the lineup beginning next year. I had the chance to see Ilan playing his ass off at Reading and Leeds a couple summers ago and he blew me away. We recently invited him out to rehearse with us and he blew US away - the perfect guy to pick up the sticks after Josh leaves us at the end of the year."
Guns N' Roses set up several free listening parties across the United States for their new album Chinese Democracy. Dates are as follows:
November 17th in New York, NY @ Webster Hall (7pm) November 17th in Dallas, TX @ Whiskey Bar (8pm) November 17th in Chicago, IL @ Joe's (8pm) November 18th in West Hollywood, CA @ The Roxy (9pm) November 18th in Minneapolis, MN @ Fine Line (6:30pm) November 19th in Atlanta, GA @ Tabernacle (7:30pm) November 20th in San Francisco, CA @ Mezzanine (7:30pm) November 20th in Boston, MA @ Cavern Club (8pm) November 20th in Detroit, MI @ St. Andrews Hall (7pm)
Chinese Democracy will be released exclusively to Best Buy on November 23.
The Deftones camp continued to keep tabs on band bassist Chi Cheng, who has steadily been showing signs of improvement and responding to movement tests. Cheng‘s mother checked in with another update, assuring fans that her son's condition remains stable. Here's what she had to say on the matter:
"Chi's condition remains stable. He is still hooked up to a respirator to control his breathing, but can now breathe on his own. Yesterday, while visiting, I let him know that all his fans are praying and waiting for him to wake up. He responded by moving his eyes underneath his eyelids. We are so very happy with all of these small victories. Yesterday Fieldy, the bass player for Korn, came to see Chi. As his visit was concluding, this nice, wonderful man left me with this, "we have the freedom of choices to make, but do not have the freedom to choose the consequences of the choices we make." We make so many choices each day, both small and large that shape the lives we live. Can anyone create a life making bad choices? Today's assignment in this: please think everything through today, both the insignificant as well as the important. Make positive choices and be aware of the consequences of your actions. Doing this will you and those around you better."
Cheng continues to show encouraging signs while recovering from a car crash that has left him in a coma.
Chevelle will begin recording their fifth studio album early next year with producer Brian Virtue (30 Seconds to Mars, Deftones). A spring release is expected, and this quickly becomes my most anticipated album of 2009.

The Dillinger Escape Plan is making progress with both work on their new DVD and their next album. Speaking on the two outings they had the following to say:
"We're wrapping up a DVD, a documentary on early years Dillinger, from the beginning, all the way through the end of the Calculating Infinity cycle, which is gonna be really cool for the ten of you out there who weren't in elementary school when this band started. For everyone else, it'll be a history lesson well worth watching, to see how this beast got started. We're writing new songs. They will be here soon. When I say soon, I mean DEP time, but soon nevertheless even factoring in DEP time....and I promise you, these songs are gonna make each and every one of you make THE FACE."
AFI will hit the studio with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Silverchair) shortly to begin recording their new studio album. No word on an estimated release date.
According to a posting on Mastodon's official website, guitarist Bill Kelliher has been hospitalized in London with an undisclosed ailment. The full posting reads as follows:
"Bill Kelliher has been hospitalized in London as of Nov.3, during the band's current European Unholy Alliance Chapter 3 package tour. Doctors will continue to monitor his condition which is improving at press time. At the moment, Mastodon has decided to continue on the tour as a trio. Doctors and Bill are hopeful that he will rejoin his bandmates in time for their headlining tour of Europe which begins Nov 30, in Utrecht, Holland and will end on Dec 7, at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in Somerset, England. More details to follow as they develop."
"Headbangers Blog" is reporting that Kelliher is suffering from pancreatitis.
August Burns Red recently checked in with an update regarding their plans to focus on their new album for the next couple months: "As many of you know we've been touring on our second full length "Messengers" for a good while now and it is finally time for us to put the van in the garage for a little while and stay at home to write a new record. We will only be playing four more shows in 2008 and we'll be taking the majority of the next 4 months to write and record. This has us very excited as we have accumulated tons of ideas for new songs. We're stoked to put everything together and write a sweet new record for everyone."
Black Tide and guitarist Alex Nunez have gone their separate ways after he and the band disagreed with the direction. Austin Diaz has stepped in as the bands new guitarist.
In This Moment's "Forever" and Lacuna Coil's "Closer" and "Swamped" will be made available as premium downloadable content for play in the "Rock Band" videogame series. Also due for release next week are the Dead Kennedys' "Police Truck", "Holiday In Cambodia" and "California Uber Alles", and Mission Of Burma's "Mica", "That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate" and "That's When I Reach For My Revolver". All songs will be available to purchase in their own respective three packs as well as individually.
Maylene And the Sons Of Disaster is moving forward with their studio plans to track their new album in December. Here's what they had to say on the matter:
"Hey guys it has been a while since we have posted anything. Well lets start from the beginning! From the famous words of Mitch that's a good place to start!! We have only a few days left on our fall tour and it has been a blast. All the bands have been so fun to hang with and have the honor of sharing the stage with. For all of those who have been waiting, we officially start tracking the new record December 1st. We are slotted until the second week of Feb. then we go to Australia for Sound Wave and then hopefully start a U.S support tour for the new record in March and April. So we are busy trying to get everything finished before pre-production. We have allot of things in the works and can't really give anything away but we are excited to bring you some new material. Guys thanks again for all the support and we are ready for a new year and a new record for Maylene. Can't wait to bring it to you guys.......God Bless"

Rumors about the possibility of Alter Bridge vocalist Myles Kennedy replacing Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin tours have yet to be squelched, which leads me to believe that's the direction they're leaning in.
On the other side of that coin, I mentioned a few weeks ago, that rumors of a Creed reunion have started to pop up. Alter Bridge/ex-Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti left the idea for a reunion wide open.
"Who knows what can happen next year? 2009 could be one of the craziest years ever for us. Again, all I can say is that Alter Bridge is still very much a band and we have every intention of carrying on."
He also stated:
"Well, we all have to be real hush-hush about [Kennedy being part of the tour]. We hear the rumors; we know what everybody's saying; but as far as what's really happening...I don't really know. Nobody does. The only thing I can say is that, no matter what happens next year, it'll be for the ultimate benefit of Alter Bridge. Alter Bridge is our number one priority. Nothing has changed that in anybody's mind."
When Led Zeppelin tours next year, they will not tour under that name. In an interview with RollingStone.com, a spokesperson for Jimmy Page stated,
"Whatever this is, it is not Led Zeppelin. Not without the involvement of Robert Plant."
Regardless, in a recent MusicRadar poll, 42% of readers who voted said Zeppelin "shouldn't bother touring." And of the possible singers (Axl Rose, Dave Grohl, Steven Tyler, David Coverdale), Kennedy scored an overwhelming 3%. And by overwhelming, I mean underwhelming. And by underwhelming, I mean, when is the next Creed album due out?
So, I ask you, dearest reader, would you see a Zeppelin tour with someone other than Robert Plant piping his vocals? Sound off, please.
i will take "fuck no" for infinity, trebeck. any singer who even CONSIDERS replacing plant in Led Zeppelin should just commit suicide. seriously, its blasphemy and it is a slap in the face to their legacy and fans. the second most exciting day of my life was when the one-off concert was announced, and now i have become more than disapointed with the band's decisions. and i am more than offended by ANY artist that considers replacing a legend. just don't do it. you will NEVER be able to replace Plant, nor will you EVER be as good.

I think this is a non-issue. Most bands have replaced people so what if another band does it? Most bands from that era have had membership changes and to name a few Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Lynard Skynard, Scorpions, Kiss, Pink Floyd, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, Aerosmith etc. The only band from that era I can think of without any membership changes is Rush. There may be more so please forgive me if I have omitted any. And even the bands after them have had membership changes like Iron Maiden, Def Leopard, Whitesnake, MSG, Rainbow, Quite Riot, Dio, Metalica, Megadeath, Van Halen, Moterhead, Overkill, Journey, Boston, etc. And most of their efforts, even with membership changes, have become classics.
And besides, only boring bands sound like their last album. Most innovative bands have made changes in their music with every album. So saying that the new Led Zeppelin without just one member will never be like the old is actually quite correct. But the things is, even if all the original members of Led Zeppelin were alive and were making music together now, they would NOT sound like the old Led Zeppelin. They would have moved on from their old sound. So I really believe that if is their LEGAL right to call themselves by that name, then they should. If Jimmy Page and co. had listened to what people were saying and not followed their own path, where would music be today? So asking them to rename themselves just because of membership changes is stupid.
But the thing that pisses me off is this, why is Black Sabbath touring as Heaven And Hell? I frankly think this is a bigger issue. I mean, Ozzy sucks. He does not even write the lyrics. He has stolen writing credits of so many people, people like Bob Daisley. I think Dio is a better singer/performer/writer. Does anyone know why Black Sabbath is bending over backwards for Ozzy?

It looks like Page knows Kennedy doesn't have a reputation even though his "Kashmir" cover did kick ass. They will likely tour....but not as Led Zepplin. Ok people...your national nightmare is over now... NO LED ZEPPLIN name being used. Its gonna be them doing Zep covers and I'll even say the name they may pick: "Stairway to Heaven" as a name.
I'm sure this pleases everyone since the Led Zepplin name won't be used.

if it aint plant , it should be plant wannabe , david coverdale . anyone remember coverdale/page ? how about what the doors did and have multiple singers do the songs ? for the record i aint payin unless plant is playin !

Two words on the Ozzy/Sabbath question, who cares(Guest) - Sharon Osbourne. The old shriveled cunt is determined to make life miserable for anyone that crosses her and milk the Sabbath/Ozzy legacy for all she can by any means necessary. She was the one behind the raping of Lee Kerslake and Bob Daisley on their royalties for the first two Ozzy CDs thus the reason they were re-recorded: to eliminate Kerslake and Daisley's contributions, which is turn nagated their claims for royalties
Zep w/o Plant = epic fail
Touring with another singer doing all Zep material = epic fail
Touring with Coverdale would be the closest, most acceptable sub for Plant, but even that's stretching it.

when they tour as led zeppelin, there's no way in hell i could afford the tickets. this new cover band, i might be able to afford. i'm cool with it as long as the singer isn't axl rose.
Posted By: the dude (original) (Guest) on November 17, 2008 at 06:23 PM
i'd have to go with coverdale on this one....
as much as i love GnR, axl would kill zeppelin songs, i think dave would be the best

Some bands can get away with a lead singer switch (Genesis, Van Halen), but to me this seems like a Velvet Revolver type situation.
I would not see Zep minus Plant plain and simple...
