The Singles Guy 11.19.08: Apparently I'm a Glutton for Punishment
Posted by Jacob Crogie on 11.19.2008

Another week, another comment free column...BOOORRRRING! No big news this week other than the continual suckage of my team, The Ottawa Senators. Geared up for a big history midterm on Thursday...OH and one more week till the release of Day & Age! Which brings me to...this week's edition featuring the latest from the aforementioned Killers, Ludacris...and...and...

Nickelback- "Something In Your Mouth"

Great, just what I wanted to have to deal with this week! We might as well get this latest shit from Chad and the gang out of the way first. Well...someone has an oral fixation, this song is clearly in the vein of "Animals" and the lyrics are so ridiculous its embarassing. But then again, it is Nickelback so one shouldn't expect anything better. I must say though, musically its rather heavy and has a nice sound...WOW...I just complimented Nickelback! Musically this band had so much potential, and the riffing in this song is just a sad reminder of that, just ignore the lyrics...trust me...you aren't missing anything. In summation, it could be a Theory of a Deadman song, and I wouldn't know the difference. Slight difference actually, I like Theory of a Deadman, because most of their songs are in this vein, there is no lame ass ballads there!

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: The song itself...minus the lyrics, it could ALMOST be good.

Rating: 2/5...WHOA...A Nickelback song that almost gets a pass...if only they could write better lyrics then a 2.5 will finally be within their reach.

The Killers- "Spaceman"

THANK GOD! Something that doesn't suck and should allow me to get back on track. Well...this is...ok...I guess... The song is more in the vein of "Sam's Town" than "Hot Fuss" and isn't as good as the lead single "Human". Don't get me wrong, it doesn't suck or anything, it's actually quite a nice song, but everything considered I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping for a big bang, something that would blow everyone away and firmly establish The Killers as THE band, but this song doesn't break out in any way. It's average and they probably could have put this on "Sawdust" and nobody would have noticed, I find it hard to believe that there was no better song to release...and now I'm worried...a little.

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: Big finish after the piano bridge!

Rating:3/5...wow...that was tough! I expect better and more from The Killers!

Ludacris Co-Starring T-Pain- "One More Drink"

OMG! This song is funny as shit! It's not meant to be taken seriously and it achieves that in spades! Wow, just wow, if you couldn't guess by the title, the song is about drunken hook ups! Luda is actually able to stay away from the typical crap and this song just shines with creativity and flow. Catchy hook done quite well by T-Pain man Luda, you shoulda got Usher on this shit! Sure, this isn't gonna change the world, but its funny as hell and that is good enough for me. Nice beat, great flow, funny lyrics, NICE! Oh, and the video kicks ass!

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: "If I take one more drink, I'm gon' end up fuckin' you, Is that watchu wanna do, shawty?"

Rating: 4/5! Deservedly so! Novelty rap at its finest when iced with Luda's killer flow!

We The Kings- "Secret Valentine"

YAY Teen emo power pop! I'm so excited! Ok, this sucks...pretty badly, typical generic teen love crap. This little band thing has accomplished nothing and yet here they are, co-headlining tours with the band they are ripping off of, "The Academy Is...". Honestly, do we need more shitty power pop? Simple chord progressions, stupid childish repetitive lyrics...what is not to love? Did I mention it was about sex? Nothing new or creative here, they are crap, just crap, the sooner these guys disappear the better.

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: The chorus shows some potential.

Rating: 1/5...Go back to school...honestly, take an English class or something.

Counting Crows- "When I Dream of Michelangelo"

That's right, these guys are still alive and churning out music. Another solid effort here, but it seems as if they peaked shortly after debuting, as this is nowhere near the quality of anything from "August & Everything After". Still has all the factors that made them so popular, semi-acoustic music and wildly introspective lyrics. The band still has the talent, but it seems the world has left them behind in favor of the Jack Johnson school of Alternative Rock.

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: "Saturn on a line, the sun afire of strings and wires, spin above my head and make it right. Anytime you'd like, you can catch a sight of angel eyes on emptiness and infinite." WHOA...let's see We The Kings come up with something like that!

Rating: 3/5 solid and unspectacular, probably won't get noticed due to the domination of teen pop ala We The Kings...fail...

Matt Mays and El Torpedo- "Building a Boat"

Time for a little Canadian content from somebody you should all check out, Matt Mays and El Torpedo. There is no way to put this other than that this song kicks major ass. Cool bluesy rock tune with amazing guitar work throughout, and its too bad that the American market just isn't exposed to this! Great song all around, and I would go out on a limb and say that it may just be his best work to date. For those of you interested in other Matt Mays tunes, check out "Cocaine Cowgirl", "On the Hood", and "Tall Trees".

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: Guitar solo, its pretty damn epic!

Rating: 4/5! This one will be getting heavy rotation on both Canadian rock radio, and my personal playlist!

Aaron Pritchett- "How Do I Get There"

YEEEHAAWWW it's time for a hoedown! This week's country interlude comes from another Canadian artist, the man behind such classics as "Hold My Beer", and "Let's Get Rowdy" (I'm not making this up...), Aaron Pritchett! This song is your typical country love song from an estranged boyfriend/husband stuck out on the road. It's got all the markings of a solid country song and doesn't go overboard. It's not for me, but I'm sure there are some out there that will love this ballad which to me, is just far too generic to be worthwhile.

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: Meh, honestly nothing sticks out, you'll understand when you give it a listen.

Rating: 2/5...it really doesn't do anything to offend me, or excite me...it's kinda meh.

Buckcherry- "Rescue Me"

The big finish this week is a song that came out of nowhere and kicked my ass! I wasn't expecting out of this latest single from Buckcherry, as "Too Drunk" simply did not sound like any more than a follow up to "Crazy Bitch", but OMG! Sure, as always, the lyrics are lacking, and are rather generic but the music is phenomenal! Pulsing back beat with cool chord progression and amazing guitar shredding. The song itself seems full of frenetic energy and has supplanted "Sorry" as my favorite Buckcherry song. The guitar solo should be longer, that is all I got for negative comments on this damn good rocker!

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: Musicality in the song, I wouldn't have expected it from Buckcherry of all bands!

Rating: 4.5/5...just short of perfection, the lyrics are just too generic...SONG OF THE WEEK!

The Kickass Five of the Week

5.The Killers feat. Lou Reed- "Tranquilize"

One more week till Day & Age! Can you tell I'm getting hyped?

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: It's Lou fucking Reed with The Killers, what isn't epic?

4.Evanescence- "Hello"

I defy all of you that say "Evanescence sucks" to listen to this song without realizing their artistic merit.

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: You'll know...when she hits notes I have never even heard before...

3.David Lee Murphy- "Dust on the Bottle"

What can I say...I'm a sucker for this one, its full of hillbilly goodness!

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: When the chorus hits and everyone sings along!

2.T.I. feat. Justin Timberlake- "Dead and Gone"

He totally came out of nowhere, I'd listened to some of his older stuff and wasn't impressed. Paper Trail comes out and I can't believe its the same guy, HOLY SHIT! If this one isn't released next I'll be incredibly upset, this song is damn epic!

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: There is nothing about this song that isn't epic!

1.Nickelback- "Just For"

Oh what they could have been, this is hard rock and this is what they should be doing today!

The Epic Moment of Insane Awesomeness: How the song seems to just be imbued with ANGER! Not cheap ass selling out make money bullshit...RANT OFF

So that's it for another week, be sure to tune in same time next week when we get the latest from The Offspring, along with another all-star collaboration, this time from Jamie Foxx & T.I.. Finally, I realize that the Guns N' Roses I love is long dead...all this and more in the next edition of The Singles Guy!

SHAMELESS PLUG
The SuperHeroes In Training

Until next week, keep your pimphand strong and your rawkfist in the air!
