The Kinks boxset, a cover collection, Richie Edwards, Noise Pop, an awful tour and more.
The bit at the start
"Wow, it's late, nearly 2AM here. No time for the small talk."
That's what I opened the column with last week. This week it's after 2 and the sentiment remains.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Boy can that boy write a tune. And fast.
You news, you lose
Girl I want to be with you all of the time.
Of all the giants of British music that emerged from the 60's it's the Kinks that I hold the most affection for. I never liked the Stones and their cod delta blues bullshit save for the odd song and as for the Beatles, the only album of theirs that I've ever loved is Revolver.
But the Kinks wrote "Waterloo Sunset", and that's enough to win my heart.
And now they're putting out a boxset, their first in fact. Picture Book, The Kinks is out on December 8th and collects 130 songs in a chronological fashion over 6 CD's and features live tracks, rarities and demos (some dating from back when they were known as The Ravens) as well as all the hits. The set comes with a 60 page booklet featuring a biography, a Kinks timeline, and previously unseen photos.

Hold on to your hats Engine Room Recordings are set to release the second volume in their Guilt By Association covers comp. The idea is that acts pick a song that's a guilty pleasure of theirs. Volume 2 features the likes of My Brightest Diamond and Frightened Rabbit amongst others.
The collection is out on February 17th physically but it's available now via iTunes (as ever I recommend against buying from iTunes, or any other online store) but if you did you'd get as a bonus a cover of "Lady In Red" which might just be the worst song in the history of everything.
Tracklisting:
01 My Brightest Diamond: "Tainted Love" [Gloria Jones/Soft Cell]
02 The Bloodsugars: "Self-Control" [Laura Branigan]
03 Robbers on High Street: "Cool It Now" [New Edition]
04 Frightened Rabbit: "Set You Free" [N-Trance]
05 Matt Pond PA: "I'm Not Okay" [My Chemical Romance]
06 Takka Takka: "In the Air Tonight" [Phil Collins]
07 Kaki King: "I Think She Knows" [Justin Timberlake]
08 Francis and the Lights: "Can't Tell Me Nothing" [Kanye West]
09 Lowry: "Africa" [Toto]
10 The Forms: "We Didn't Start the Fire" [Billy Joel]
11 Rafter: "If You Leave" [OMD]
12 Cassettes Won't Listen: "Need You Tonight" [INXS]
13 Jukebox the Ghost: "It's a Beautiful Life" [Ace of Base]
14 Max Vernon: "I Kissed a Girl" [Katy Perry]
15 The Bloodsugars: "Lady in Red" [Chris de Burgh] *
* iTunes bonus track
For the best.
One of the most convoluted and saddest saga's in British music in the past 2 decades concluded last week when Richie Edwards, guitarist and lyricist with The Manic Street Preachers was finally declared "presumed dead" 13 years after he disappeared.
Edwards was last seen on the morning of February 1st 1995 when he checked out of his London hotel. His abandoned car was found two weeks later at the Severn Bridge, a popular spot for suicides.
Welsh newspaper The Western Mail quoted Edwards' families solicitor as saying that the decision to upgrade his status from missing to presumed dead is "an acceptance that his affairs have got to be sorted. That's not the same as an acceptance that he is dead."
A spokesman for the band also said, "The band has been aware this was coming. This is the parents' choice and the band is happy to go with what the parents decide is best. We all dream Richey will come back one day. You hope he is still around somewhere. But it is no longer a realistic hope and if this offers some kind of closure then the band will be content with that."
The Manics are currently working on their next album with Steve Albini and are using some of the lyrics that Edwards had written prior to his disappearance. A message on the band's website said that "Finally it feels like the right time to use them."
The last Manics record to feature Edward's lyrics was Everything Must Go back in the 90's, coincidentally it's also the last decent thing they did.

Next year's Noise Pop Festival takes place from February 24-March 1 has announced the first batch of names to play and it's already looking like they've picked a few winners.
The event, which will take place in various venues around San Francisco has lined up performances from the likes of Antony and the Johnsons, New Pornographers frontman A.C. Newman, No Age, Goblin Cock (featuring Pinback's Rob Crow), and Unicorns offshoot Clues. The event will also see a number of films being screened including Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Agile Mobile Hostile: A Year with Andre Williams.
If I were you I wouldn't go to these gigs.
Pretty much the worst tour imaginable. Kaiser Chiefs will head off on a UK and Ireland tour kicking off next February and if that didn't look like a boring enough night out then he's bringing along the giant bag of Florida shite that is Black Kids.
Urrgh.
The tour starts in Dublin on February 19th so maybe if I'm in a particular mood I could do all of these islands a favour.
Make alternate plans for these dates.
