Welcome to my picks for the Top 20 Best Albums of 2008. I've been counting down my favorite albums of the year for the past three days. If you missed Part 1 or Part 2, click the links below. Part 1: #100-51 Part 2: #50-21
Send me your Top 10 lists in the comments section!
Top 20 Best Albums of 2008
#20 REM-Accelerate
REM's 14th studio album isn't going to be as highly regarded in the rock history books as Murmur, Document, or Automatic For the People but it will be considered their first completely strong album in 15 years. Unlike their past five releases, which relied on studio trickery and experimentalism, Accelerate is a straightforward ROCKER (like the kind of uptempo rock on classics like "It's the End of the World As We Know It" and "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?") featuring some of REM's punchiest noise pop ditties to date.
#19 Calexico-Carried To Dust
Calexico aren't breaking any new ground for themselves on their 7th studio album. However, this is their most enjoyable album from point A-B yet and it plays like the perfect soundtrack for a drive through the American Southwest. Carried To Dust is so subtly cool, avoiding some of the cheesy Adult Alternative trappings of previous efforts. Download "Two Silver Trees" immediately to whet the palate and then immerse yourself fully in the rest of the album's delicate horns, percussion, guitar (Spanish and slide are their strongest points), and breathy, descriptive vocals.
#18 Sons & Daughters-This Gift
The evolution of Glasgow's Sons & Daughters is something to be admired. This Gift highlights the band maturing lyrically with even sexier female vocals and a more focused approach to their influences: X, rockabilly, ‘60s soul & Mod, and ‘70s British pop-punk. Look no further than "This Gift", "Rebel With the Ghost", and "House in My Head" for the best songs of their young career.
#17 Bon Iver-For Emma, Forever Ago
Bon Iver is the pen name for Justin Vernon, a Wisconsin man who retreated to a remote log cabin to record a lo-fi, neo-folk album. In a similar of vein of like sounding songwriters, including Antony Hegarty (Antony and the Johnsons) and Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Vernon's debut constructs hushed vignettes of pain, finger pointing, regret, and ultimately, renewal. Springtime music this is not, but if you can handle the heavy baggage expressed on For Emma, you're sure to find one of the better poetic musical exercises in recent memory.
#16 Fleet Foxes-Fleet Foxes
I don't know what critics proclaimed as the "feel good film of 2008" but the Fleet Foxes' self-titled debut could be the soundtrack. This album is bursting with gorgeous harmonies led by a guy whose pipes are spot on like Jim James of My Morning Jacket, only Fleet Foxes (debatably) made a much better album this year than MMJ. The describe themselves as making "baroque harmonic pop jams", which is a fitting description since their music contains elements of traditional folk, gospel, and ‘60s "flower power" rock ‘n roll.
#15 Vivian Girls-Vivian Girls
This young, all-female, Brooklyn trio were a music blogger's fantasy band this year with their just-over-twenty-minutes debut album of lo-fi, kinda sloppy, melodramatic fuzz-rock. Initially released in a batch of 500 copies, the record quickly became a hot item on eBay, selling for nearly $100 before being picked up and re-released by In the Red Records [writer's note: I picked up an original copy at their show in Chicago for $10…score!]. All hype aside, any one of the ten gems here could've been released by classic girl group The Shangri-Las (or even Bleach-era Nirvana) during their heyday and not sound out of place. Love and heartbreak are the themes here and the lyrical naivety on tracks like "All the Time", "Wild Eyes", and "Tell the World" are refreshing in their straightforwardness.
#14 Sparks-Exotic Creatures of the Deep
Sparks are one of the most underrated bands in the history of rock…period. They've released over 20 albums since the early ‘70s but are often overlooked as a novelty band despite crafting some of the most intelligent pop songs of the rock ‘n roll era. Here, the Brothers Mael continue to create multi-part orchestrations highlighted with Russell's often hilarious wordplay and falsetto vocals. "Lighten Up, Morrissey" sees Sparks at their most hard rocking since 1971's "This Town Ain't Big Enough For the Both of Us" (their biggest hit) while the coy humor rolls off effortlessly on should be singles like "I Can't Believe You Fell For All the Crap in This Song" and "She Got Me Pregnant". It's not every day you find an album of new material by a band whose influence is apparent on bands ranging from Queen, Depeche Mode, and MGMT.
#13 Be Your Own Pet-Get Awkward
Bratty, brash, and boisterous, this young Nashville group disbanded (far too early) following the release of Get Awkward, their 2nd studio album. This is a twisted gem of female fronted punk rock but don't confuse this with the self righteousness of the deceased riot grrrl scene. The musicianship is stronger and the lyrics more funny (and dark) than on their debut. These qualities are most apparent on the controversial murder fantasy, track-not released on the US version- "Becky" (sample lyric: "me and her, we'll kick your ass, we'll wait with knives after class"), the 1st single and ode to Beyond the Valley of the Dolls in "The Kelly Affair" and the hater anthem "Bitches Leave". Hopefully these early 20-somethings go on to new projects sooner than later.
#12 WHY?-Alopecia
WHY? is an Oakland band playing an unusual hip-hop influenced version of They Might Be Giants brain-rock, containing heavily descriptive, speak-sing narratives and a gifted sense of humor. Their 3rd album is keyboard, guitar, and percussion heavy while highlighting the cryptic, highly sexual and emotive, stream of conscious lyrics of MC Yoni Wolf. Alopecia will bounce from the introspective to the just plain silly in less than a handful of beats and the ride from these two disconnected points is almost always a delight. "The Hallows" is a great way to test the waters of this inventive band.
#11 Girl Talk-Feed the Animals
Come on, you know it's funny to hear Lil' Wayne rap "rather be gittin' some head, git gittin' some head" alternate with the chorus of Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl". Some artists aren't laughing though. That's because DJ Girl Talk has taken hundreds of samples (again) of pop songs from the past 40 years-ranging from Metallica to Wu-Tang Clan to Rod Stewart and everywhere in between- without record company or artist consent to construct the ultimate mash up album (again!). Bored on a Friday night? Get your friends together to see who can list the most songs sampled on this exercise in excessive perfection. Be forewarned: due to legal reasons, you can only get this album on Girl Talk's website (they have a "pay as much as you want" agreement like Radiohead did last year).
#10 Man Man-Rabbit Habits
The unexpected tempo changes, liberal use of wacky and overlooked instruments (or, anything they can get their hands on and make music out of), and Tex Avery cartoon music on acid sound are still in tact but this time around Man Man is more accessible than ever and with more focus. Pulling from influences that seem to range from Tom Waits to Captain Beefheart to the experimental lounge of Esquivel, this is the most surprising party album of the year. Rabbit Habits is easily Man Man's best work to date.
#9 The Magnetic Fields-Distortion
Innovative and groundbreaking, this is not. In fact, Magnetic Fields mastermind Stephen Merritt is open about ripping off the distorted, wall of sound noise-pop made famous by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Fortunately, the formula worked well for Merritt's coy songwriting, and his players create a sonic world much different than their past indie-electro & pop leanings. I listened to this album more than anything else this year with the surf-rock on "Three Way", the bouncy "Too Drunk To Dream", the melodramatic "I'll Dream Alone", and the hilarious "Nun's Litany" as Distortion's strongest cuts. Really though, this whole album is gold and whether you're in a fun loving or down in the dumps mood, this album will make you smile.
#8 Wolf Parade-At Mount Zoomer
Wolf Parade's 2006 debut, Apologies to the Queen Mary, was almost universally considered one of the best albums of that year and featured a couple stellar singles ("Shine a Light" and "I'll Believe In Anything"). It came as a surprise to many when they released the 9 track At Mount Zoomer this year, which doesn't have any discernable singles initially and might make for a bewildering listen. Listen to the album a few times though and the songs begin to slowly reveal their underlying pop tendencies, with the duties being split evenly once again between Dan Boeckner's more straightforward rockers and Spencer Krug's synthesizer/organ driven, unconventional tunes. The tone from both songwriters is darker and slightly more pessimistic than on their debut but this shouldn't be grounds for divorce. Just grab a pair of headphones and listen to At Mount Zoomer through new ears: some of the best art is that which doesn't affect us all at once.
#7 Jay Reatard-Singles 06-07/ Singles ‘08
The two best punk records were released by one man this year: Jay Reatard. It seems like Jay released a perfect 7" single every month for the past 3 years straight. In the Red Records and Matador collected his singles for two separate releases of lo-fi, garage punk/power-pop fury. It's hard to recommend one singles collection over the other-every single track sounds like an "A" side-so you'd be best served picking up both of these collections.
#6 TV on the Radio-Dear Science
This probably isn't the first time you've heard that Dear Science isn't as daring or complex asReturn To Cookie Mountain (2006), or more debatedly, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes (2004), but it's still better than at least 9 outta 10 of the albums that hit the streets in any given year. Dear Science sees TVOTR taking a more straightforward approach to their experimental twist on Doo Wop, Afrobeat, punk, electronica, shoegaze, and whatever else they can shove into their musical broth. For the band this is a good thing as it will probably widen their already large, cult fanbase. Old fans can take solace in the band making another nearly flawless album despite tidying up the noise a bit. For all the publications placing this album as the #1 album of 2008: where were you for their stronger, more engaging first two ful-lengths?
#5 Vampire Weekend-Vampire Weekend
With songs titled "Mansard Roof", "Oxford Comma", and "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa", and clean, preppy attire, these young Ivy Leaguers (Columbia U. to be exact) wear their affluence with pride. After all the hype died down, naysayers ate their words when they heard the biggest buzz album of 2008: a polished, fun collection of faux Afro-pop, ska, and Paul Simon/The Police/David Byrne indebted pop. The album is served well by its short run time, brilliantly catchy melodies, and absence of a single mediocre track in the batch ("Bryn" being the only non 4-star track in the lot).
#4 The Walkmen-You & Me
The Walkmen's drunk ‘n lonely after last call on a Saturday night tone has never been as sullen and quiet as on You & Me, their 4th album of original material. That's not to say that the band doesn't deliver occasional bursts of firey energy, aided by frontman Hamilton Leithauser's distinctive growl: they're just more economical with the angst here. This is The Walkmen's strongest display of maturity and intimacy yet, and just as great as their nearly flawless back catalog.
#3 Portishead-Third
After two superb studio albums (1994's Dummy and 1997's Portishead), there didn't seem to be a way for Portishead to one up themselves. After all, they have a sound they've pigeonholed themselves into and its elasticity is only so expansive. To the surprise of many, they got their straight-faced groove back with this unsettling trip-hop collection. As per usual, the band's timeless sound has an eerie texture, recalling a stark Russian spy thriller drenched in blue filters where the narrator could very well be the killer. Beth's vocals walk the balance of sexy and frightening while the influence of Ennio Morricone soundtracks flashes brilliantly from the palate. If we have to sit 10 more years for another offering this impressive, Portishead will make it well worth our wait.
#2 The Raveonettes-Lust Lust Lust
The end is nigh: The Raveonettes have out Phil Spector'd the Jesus and Mary Chain with Lust Lust Lust. '50s and '60s influenced surf guitar fuzz, drowning in reverb and gorgeous two part harmonies (deadpan has never been sung so sweetly) abound on the duo's 4th album. Even a song as clichéd as the hit "You Want the Candy" (seriously, how many Spector influenced songs need to be about sugar) comes off likable because the melody is too damn catchy. Every song would be a hit song in a just world and Lust Lust Lust reads like a greatest hits collection. If Chain Gang of Love were compared to Jesus and Mary Chain's noisy, ramshackle classic Psychocandy then Lust Lust Lust is naturally The Raveonettes' Darklands: an even, controlled statement of the band's handle of rock history knowledge and equally tuned gift of perfect noise-pop song structure.
#1 Deerhunter-Microcastle Microcastle finds Deerhunter making Nuggets-era psych pop spun through Sonic Youth's Goo-ey Washing Machine (the snotty punkish "Nothing Ever Happened" could just as well be pulled from Thurston Moore's songbook). This is more accessible than Cryptograms or anything Bradford Cox has put his hands on musically. Deerhunter have tapped into the natural evolution of shoegaze, finding a new tortured, avant-genius to take the reigns from Kevin Shields and Billy Corgan. In fact, this album has much in common with My Bloody Valentine and early Smashing Pumpkins, which is why it's no surprise this album is more widely praised than its predecessor…and will likely be regarded as one of the more important albums of the newish millennium.
Past #1 Albums of the Year
2007: Panda Bear-Person Pitch
2006: TV On the Radio-Return To Cookie Mountain
2005: The New Pornographers-Twin Cinema
2004: The Arcade Fire-Funeral
2003: Hot Snakes-Audit In Progress
2002: Wilco-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
2001: The Shins-Oh, Inverted World
I knew II Trill would be number 1. Good list, but only because you put II Trill at number 1.

Not a bad list, but FF out of the top 10 is criminal and I still just don't get Vampire Weekend.

Who?
Posted By: t-bone (Guest) on December 16, 2008 at 11:54 PM
Nice to see Portishead get some love. I thought Third was, if not quite as good as their last stuff, still far better then most of the stuff put out this year.

wow. your retarded. those fucktards vampire d-bag-end. over the metallica cd. wow. maybe all bands should not know how to make music and just take lessons for 3 weeks and the top 10 list would be epic. vampire weekend in the top 5. you have no credibility. retard.

Damn people are dumb and dumber , it's fantastic
Thanks for the list man UNLIKE the other assholes whom are complaining to have "never heard of" half of these bands I DO ENJOY DISCOVERING BRAND NEW ARTISTS and ALBUMS .
I'm gonna download all the names I've never heard of here and hope to enjoy some of them .

100 bands...100 albums...out of all of these on the tree lists I have only heard of 7 of them...wtf?

to guest #6839, i guess you better get listening then, ay?
Posted By: Guest#1348 (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 02:24 AM
i enjoy discovering new music as well and im not doubting these albums are good...the problem is this guy seems like hes giving undeserving indie albums better ratings than mainstream albums just cuz their indie. Lots of people do that nowadays just to be hipsters and tell u things u dont know about music. This would be an awesome list if it was under the name #100 underrated and overlooked albums but its instead advertised as the best of 08 which is simply not true. Bottom line, just cuz its indie doesnt make it automatically better.
Posted By: the answer to the question (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 03:15 AM
well i just read the writers note at the beginning for the 1st time .... i do think this guy is writing off mainstream albums just because of the mainstream label...he does explain himself a little more than i thought, my apologizes to brian berry
Posted By: the answer 2 (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 03:22 AM
Pretty bad list.
How can they be the best if NO-ONE has heard of them?
This year , the albums that made an impact were
Coldplay - VIVA LA VIDA
Kanye west - 808S and heartbreak
Britney Spears - Circus
Miley Cyrus - Breakout
David Cook
The Jonas Brothers
Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad
Beyonce - I Am
GNARLS BARKLEY, "The Odd Couple"
TI - paper trail
and
Katy Perry.
I'm not saying this was really great music and better than your list , but it definitely made a much larger impact on a whole lot of people.

While I will check out quite a few of these albums, it does seem the author has attempted to be as obscure/different as possible. But then again, he's obviously an indie guy, so why expect him to recognise the brilliance of Nas or Atmosphere's albums to name just two?

Posted By: Guest#8156 (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 08:40 AM
God, you people are ignorant. "This list is shit because I haven't heard of any of these bands". The problem doesn't lie with the list, it lies with your inability to grasp that music exists outside of what you see in the charts and hear on the radio. If you gave a shit about music, you would have heard of these band. If you're merely a casual listener of pop music, then that's fine, but this list isn't for you.
Posted By: bob (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 08:55 AM
Terrible list. You Blow
Posted By: Guest#9165 (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 09:39 AM
It's kind of funny that all these dudes are complaining about this list and their big complaint is, "Where's Metallica? Why are they so low?"
You can't complain about the list and then bring up some has been band that thinks a trash can top is a snare drum. Sorry Rock Band and Guitar Hero fans, but Metallica was good before most of ya'll were born. Now they're the best of a genre that has been in a 10 year coma.
Posted By: Frank (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Like I said in Part 1, #56 Brian Berry? Really??? Your opinion is horrible, but it is your opinion. However, my worst song on this album is better than most of these songs I've just seen on your video links. Truly a horrible list, and I look forward to getting 30 of my friends to comment on this page to get you fired.

hey wheres the carter 3? also if youre tryin to flex your indie muscle you missed the boat on the new of montreal album. furthermore vampire weekend is terrible.

ok i admit i havent been following this list but you're telling me this joke of a top twenty where the bands play in each other's garages and basements is better than slipknot, metallica, guns n' roses, or even motley crue?
Posted By: go away lil wayne (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Man I was all for this list until I saw Vampire Weekend at #5. That album made me wish I was deaf.
Posted By: Joe Roche (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 12:05 PM
I'm not gonna sit here and talk about how awesome Metallica is..because they aren't! but bands like Vampire WD don't really offer up anything special for me...i am very open to indie music but to make such a massive list of the BEST and fill it with an overly biased opinion is damaging to your credibility...i know it's an article based on opinion, but part of being a good journalist is getting over yourself and "giving credit when credit is due", and maybe next time you shouldn't be given such a major aritcle if you have such a narrow-minded view of music
Posted By: Erik (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 12:58 PM

what makes that sad is that it's probably not a joke.
anyways, great list man. although, i have to admit that i just don't get the whole vampre weekend thing.
anyways, here's mine.
10. Flight of the Conchords/Les Savy Fav - After the Balls Drop
I hated to do a tie, but honestly i couldn't leave either of them off my list.
9. Iwrestledabearonce - iwrestledabearonce
The best metal album in years. Genre savior to say the least.
8. +/- - X's In Your Eyes
7. Joy Division - Control Soundtrack
Kind of cheating, I know, but it DID come out this year.
6. Deerhunter - Microcastle
5. Man Man - Rabbt Habits
I discovered these guys a year or two ago opening for Modest Mouse, and their live show was one of the best I've ever seen. I'm very glad that they put out an album that somewhat captured the energy they have live.
4. Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
The closest thing to a "fun" record they've ever done. I enjoied it far more than I thought I would.
3. Kings of Leon - Only By the Night
The only really glaring omission from your list, thought this album was amazing and all the hype well earned.
2. Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into
Where was the love for his album on the critics' lists this year?? I actually read a lot of said critics were shitting all over this album, but i thought it was one of the best party records I've heard in ages.
1. TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Of course TVOTR is number one. My sentiments of this record pretty much reflect yours. Only I had the balls to go with the grain and name it number 1. You scenester, you.
anyways, i dig your lists every year man. you are onestly the only music writer on 411 that I can stand, so I hope you keep up the good work. can't wai til next year.
Posted By: grantimus (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 01:36 PM
i literally had heard of two of these bands.
popular music is popular for a reason
IT DOESNT SUCK
Posted By: S Dot (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 01:53 PM
I have to say that the audience that reads 411mania (keep in mind it evolved from a pro wrestling website) are not the kind of people who listen to (and I quote):
"the natural evolution of shoegaze, finding a new tortured, avant-genius to take the reigns from Kevin Shields and Billy Corgan."
I listened to a few of the videos you posted and some of it was actually decent (your #1 wasn't my cup of tea). So congratulations for making a list that will hopefully introduce people to some new music. I'd actually prefer reading a list like this than someone who just copied their list from the billboard top selling albums list.
That being said, your writing style and choice of adjectives makes you sound like an elitist indy rock douchebag, which, as my less well spoken contemporaries point out, is not very appealing.
Posted By: Pile On! (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 02:34 PM
Wow, looking around on other sites, I am seeing very similar lists full of bands most people aren't familiar with. Fine, that is usually how these lists are, same goes for the top movies of the year lists. I have accepted that my tastes are different from most, but Vampire Weekend, The Hold Steady, and TV on the Radio...I don't get it. I can't find a single thing to enjoy or like about any of the three. What am I missing here?
Posted By: Rob (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 02:44 PM
I'm not even really that upset about "Death Magnetic" not being in the top 20, but seriously, where's the love for progressive Swedish metal (or metal in general)??? Opeth's "Wathershed" is absolutely beautiful, while Meshuggah's "Obzen" is a juggernaut of an album. These are two near-masterpieces by two of the most talented and forward-thinking bands in the world.

Best album 2008:
Black Pus - Black Pus 4: All Aboard the Magic Pus
Black Pus = Lightning Bolt = Another BRILLIANT Album
Posted By: Dude (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Oh my god, there are a lot more dumb asses using this site then i originally thought. Maybe if they turn off MTV or Rock 105 and listen to music thats trying to be innovative and original then they would know half of the bands that you listed. Some dumbass actually said that Miley Cirus and Britney Spears album made a larger impact on people than any album on this list. Whos life is impacted by this terrible music? I, for one, know almost every band that appeared on this list. No, these bands arent on your typical "rock" (whatever that word means) radio stations, but I guarantee you that any ONE band on this top twenty list put out better music than the majority of "popular" music. Im sure that alot of people will be offended by this post and will bitch and moan about it, but bring it. I know music and im proud to say that! So bring it. Cause I will tear you apart. And one last thing, if you only know one band on this list, then dont post that as a comment. It really makes you look retarded. Good list Brian Berry. Goodnight and good luck.
Posted By: Chris A, (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 03:55 PM
I think the thing that bothers me the most, is how weird these bands are when i TRY to listen to them. yet the author just uses FOUR bands that he knows the readers MAY have heard of to sell the article.

I think I would rather listen to the same "Softball Guy" story for a year, than listen to Vampire Weekend again, jesus, that crap (IMO) is horrible...

Nice list, good to see R.E.M. and Magnetic Fields in particular.

You've listened to all these nobodies, but not Opeth? Seriously. Epic fail.

The music I like is better than the music you like!

Overall, I was really impressed with this list. I wasn't expecting much, especially considering it came from 411 where, as the charm of these comments highlight, these types of bands probably aren't appreciated.
I just don't get Girl Talk. All his albums just remind me of crap DJ mixes they play at at Jersey Shore bars for the fist pumping guidos.

If some of you illiterates read his intro in the 1st part maybe this list would make more sense to you. Have YOU (readers) even heard 100 records this year? Even 30? Probably not. Get a more informed opinion and argue sensibly or shut the fuck up. saying "fuck this list" doesn't say shit. And if I have to hear metallica, guns n roses, or vampire weekend one more time in the comment section i will e-strangle the shit out of you and your mothers.
Suck it.

I've never heard of 95% of this crap. No love for hip hop shown (Nas, Atmosphere, Ludacris, Common Market & Q-Tip among others all had great albums this year) which is no surprise. This should be re-named best garage band albums of 2008. What a disgrace!

Brian,
Seriously man, don't listen to the naysayers on this comments board. First and foremost, like all lists, it's your own opinion. Everyone has an opinion and they're what make conversations so intriguing and fun to have. Unless, of course, like most of the people on here, they choose to breath through their mouth.
Secondly, I personally love coming on this site each year for THIS COLUMN specifically. It's so hard to find some NEW music to listen to with the overabundance of "capitalist-pop". Myself, I like to hear other people's opinions regarding what's new and exciting in the music outside of the radio (I'd really like to hear more of Man Man, they REALLY have that Tom Waits/Beefheart thing going; you're absolutely spot on).
And lastly, I know you don't take much of this criticism seriously. If I were you, I'd be laughing myself quite intensely listening to QUITE the musical plethora you've got going. Some people just don't want to listen to new things and, hey, you can't force them to try it. It's the "sushi complex" within the realm of music. C'se la vie, it's their loss.
Keep up the great work, man. Can't wait to hear from you next year!

One of the worst fucking lists ever. REM need to fuck off, so does Brian Berry.

"i literally had heard of two of these bands.
popular music is popular for a reason
IT DOESNT SUCK"
I can't tell if you're being serious or not. If you're not (and I sincerely hope you're not), then you sir, are asomething of a comedic genius. If however, you're being serious, then your idiocy astounds me...
Posted By: bob (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 07:17 PM
Of course everyone has an opinion, but this is posted as the "end all be all" of best of 2008 lists. Maybe best indie list? Or best list according to Brain? That would save you some of our insults.
Posted By: James (Registered) (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 07:40 PM
there isn't much hip hop here but #12 is...totally underrated band
Posted By: sloth (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 07:41 PM
Where does it say "end all be all" list?
In his first installment, the writer clearly states:
"With that said, this list reflects the opinions of one writer and does not necessarily represent the ideas of 411 Mania's other writers, management, or its owner.
Enjoy...
-BB"
And secondly, in this post he states:
"... a few of the bands to end up on the Top 20 of my selections for the Best Albums of the Year. Check in to see who else made the rest of the 2008 list!"
**Note the "Top 20 of MY selections for the Best Albums of the Year".
No where does it say end all, be all in the same two breaths. Sorry, but you're wrong.
Posted By: Guest#7628 (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 08:32 PM
portishead are like from some other kind of musical planet.
everyother band on your list SOUND THE FUCK'N SAME.
sorry, but "indy" hipster pretentious music is not my thing.
Posted By: philburttheturtle (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 09:07 PM
I want to try out some of these bands, But I doubt I see any of them at the local record stores.
Posted By: Ant-LOX (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 09:09 PM
Good job on the list. Many thanks for scouring the year's obscure releases and finding quality stuff. A lot of time it seems like there is nothing artistically worthwhile, but good work like this gives us some faith. Modern music might not be artistically bankrupt after all.
On that note, there is a really intriguing no-name band in New Mexico. Judging by this list, I think you might enjoy it...they are called Codeword Zefferina. It is pretty innovative stuff that belongs in this new-alternative genre, but still sticks out on its own merit.
Posted By: say say say (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Throwing around the word "pretentious" liberally (as some commentors are) is a million times more pretentious than anything on his list.
People tend to react defensively to things they don't understand or don't take the time to understand, hence the haters. I'd guess that 10 out of 10 people who are hating haven't heard an entire album on this list from beginning to end. Thus, you are making ignorant statements.
...and just because somebody listens to indie music doesn't make them a hipster. It's about as ignorant a comment as someone saying that you probably live in your parent's basement because you're so uneducated that you make weak arguments using baseless comments on an internet site while you cower behind your computer. Persuasive writing is taught in 8th grade son.
...and need I remind you that bands welcomed into the mainstream like Nirvana, Death Cab for Cutie, Beck, The Shins, and Soundgarden were all once indie bands until writers and college radio gave them tons of attention, catapulting them into the mainsteam and platinum selling record status (which, as it sounds, seems to be the problem...you've never heard of most of the bands on his list)?
Shit, even Deerhunter (his #1) opened for Nine Inch Nails on their US tour. That ain't small potatoes brother.
And finally, if these are bands nobody's heard of, why have most of them played the Coachella Festival, Lollapalooza, or Bonnaroo (possibly the 3 largest US festivals)? Has Nickelback or Miley Cyrus been invited to any of these?
Posted By: pretentious hipster (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 10:09 PM
...and I just have to say this to all of the people who commented that these are all no-name bands or that anything non-mainstream is not worth reading about/listening to: Stop being sheep! Try something new and the only reason why most of these super talented bands aren't known is because people don't try to go out and find things on their own...
You're doing good work. Everyone do their part in fighting cookie-cutter music...only listening to what you are spoon-fed destroys music and the art of it.
Last thing- acts like AC/DC, Ozzy, Metallica, Guns N Roses are fine but we NEED innovation and new faces. The talent is out there, but we have to get people to give it a shot. Lists like this do that.
Here are some other bands I'd urge people to find:
*Fly-Away Tigers
*Heavenly States
*The Casual Lust
*Indian Jewelry
*The Unit Breed
*Bears

Firstly; yay for Sparks (#14). Awesome pop band who never get their due.
With that out of the way, I'm not overly familiar with a lot of these bands. However, this in no way means its a bad list; yes, a BIASED list (something the writer doesn't deny) but not a bad list. There isn't much metal because it isn't his favourite genre and his interest/enjoyment of it is probably passing compared to "indie" music (just like punk, I'm not convinced that indie is a genre of music). Same goes for hip-hop and what have you.
In short: Very Berry Biased List
NOT a Very Berry Bad List.

Amen about not having to be a hipster to listen to indie/unknown bands. It isn't about feeling superior to others, it is about finding good music wherever it may be. Almost ALL bands, including the ones you mentioned (Nirvana, Beck, etc.) started as nobodies, so why not go out and find things on your own? With the internet, it is easier than ever before and you may get into the next big thing before anyone knows about it- and that feels pretty cool.
More random bands you should check:
*The Ruby Suns (NZ)- Their song Mojave is being used in that massive Microsoft ad campaign- and they deserve the break after their van combusted while on tour in the US and they lost EVERYTHING. They had to go to their embassy to get home.
*Zechs Marquise (El Paso, TX)- Has the younger sibling of the front-man of The Mars Volta, but they are making a name on their own the right way with amazing live shows. This band will eventually be huge. Check it out if you like Mars Volta, King Crimson, early Pink Floyd.
*Mae-Shi (CA)
*Nick Angelo (NM)
*Rademacher (CA)
*Codeword Zefferina (NM)
*Phonograph (NY)
*Green Milk From The Planet Orange (Japan)

I'm not going to dis the writer...I'm just kinda in shock of apparently how out of touch I am. I consider myself pretty diversified and all as well as often knowing bands etc that my friends and all don't. I think I have actually heard of maybe 3 or 4 of the top 20
weird...
Posted By: SerDrake (Guest) on December 17, 2008 at 11:43 PM
I just love how at the beginning of the first article it clearly states that this list expresses only the opinions of the writer and not of anyone else of the 411mania staff. Do you know why it says that? It's there because NO ONE gives a shit about these faggoty bands other than the mentally challenged writer. The staff at 411 might as well have made the homepage into a giant banner that reads, "Brian Berry is a dumbass and we in no way want his shitty list associated with the rest of this site. -Thank you from the 411mania Staff"
Posted By: That's Gotta Hurt! (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 12:02 AM
All you people who are whining about not knowing any of the bands maybe should go listen to them because their alot better then the garbage mainstreem shit that you listen too. Dont mock someone over their list when you dont even have a clue of what good music is.

#1. Motorhead: Motorizer
Buy this album immediately. You're all welcome.

i did read the intro to part 1 so i i cant complain too much about the list, but it should be titled 'favorite albums of 2008' or 'most underrated albums of 2008' not best of. ..
my top five favorite albums of the year are-
Five finger death punch-the way of the fist
10 years- division
metallica- death magnetic
shinedown-sound of madness
trivium-Shogun
i know someone is gonna give me hell in the comment board but fuck you i enjoyed these more than anything else i spent money on this year

Good fuckin' list mate! Vampire Weekend stills blows though. They play music like a sack of potatoes.
Posted By: TLaFee (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 03:47 AM
Excellent list - completely agree about Sparks (who are very well known throughout Europe), Exotic Creatures of the Deep is a tremendous album.
Posted By: Guest#3616 (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 10:55 AM
The comments that i see here just show that the dumbing of america is apparent. radio is in the sorriest state of all time. bands like the fleet foxes should get airplay instead of shallow pop/rap and metal. all the good stuff is underground. does any of these people have any musical taste or are they just trying to be macho or cool.
Posted By: blue guitar (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 01:07 PM
"indy" has become a genre. these bands are NOT making a movement but rather making music that already has an existing audience.
i like originality. the kind of artist that NEEDS a creative outlet. not someone whos going to give in to their insecurities.
in short...
some people are scared of being themselves.
you people defending your genre know nothing about the real underground.
Posted By: IMO.. (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 09:34 PM
the funny thing to me is how everyone keeps talking about how "obscure" this list is. it really dosen't seem very obscure at all, to me. these are, for the most part, VERY well known bands/acts to the music scene. most of these bands have been heavily covered by rolling stone, spin, and other mags that you can buy at any target or wal mart.
like they said though...you can't really expect much from fans that originated from a wrestling fan site. afterall, think of how incredibly shitty 99% of the music WWE picks to be "the official theme song" of whatever PPV of the month is going on.
they pick those shitty, hot topic-core songs because they know these mouth breathers will love it.
i love your list, bro. i would probably put Fleet Foxes at number one, though.
but that's just my opinion.
jeff.

Abysmal. New writers please?

There hasn't been 100 decent albums come out in the last 10 years combined, let alone in 2008 alone.
Posted By: Fun To Hate (Guest) on December 19, 2008 at 07:57 PM
Not a bad list, however, I feel that Bon Iver should be much higher, if not the best of the year (which is my pick).
Some records missing:
White Denim - Exposion
The Moondoggies - Don't Be A Stranger
Dungen - 4
Santogold - s/t
No Age - Nouns
The Black Keys - Attack And Release
Menahan Street Band - Make The Road By Walking
Wye Oak - If Children
Culture Reject - s/t
Sigur Ros - Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
