The Alternative Nation News Report 01.25.09: I'm Back (Seriously)
Posted by Taylor Martin on 01.25.2009

Column Start

Fuck my life. After the holidays, I was back and ready to go. Then my computer craps out. But it's fixed now and so I'll have a column every week now from now on.

Probably.

Maybe.

NEWS TIME!

News N' Stuff

In the continuing of exploitation of Radiohead, EMI will re-release their first three albums (Pablo Honey, The Bends, and OK Computer) in double and triple disc formats. The double disc format will be the album itself on one disc with B-sides and live performances on the other. The third disc will be a DVD consisting of live performances from that album's era. EMI is totally looking for a quick buck here, but it is a pretty good collection and one that is convenient as well, even though none of the songs or live performances were previously released. Slipknot's Chris Fehn (you know, the guy who bangs on garbage cans) said in an interview that the band will be bigger than Metallica one day. He also thinks that Slipknot has not reached their musical apex and that they have yet to make their "Black Album". Sounds like someone has their mask on too tight. When Slipknot sells over 100 million copies, is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, records (arguably) the best metal album of all time, AND the best selling metal album of all time then they might have a chance of becoming bigger than Metallica. Until then, shut the fuck up and bang on your garbage cans.

DLC of the Week

Rock Band:

The Dead take over Rock Band:

Grateful Dead
"Cold Rain & Snow"
"Doin' That Rag"
"Don't Ease Me In"
"Fire on the Mountain"
"Hell In a Bucket"
"Uncle John's Band"

I'm not a huge fan of The Grateful Dead, however their songs are pretty fun to play. Slight recommendation.

Guitar Hero:

The Boss and Brits dominate this week:

Bruce Springsteen:
"Born to Run"
"My Lucky Day"

"My Lucky Day" is a track from his newest album, Working on a Dream, and since I haven't heard it, I have no opinion. "Born to Run", however, is a classic and I highly recommend it. The best part is these two songs are free for a limited time so there is no reason you shouldn't have these songs.

Oasis:
"The Turning"
"I'm Outta Time"
"(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady"
"Falling Down"
"To Be Where There's Life"
"Ain't Got Nothin'"
"The Nature of Reality"
"Soldier On"

Along with "Bag it Up", "Waiting for the Rapture", and "The Shock of the Lightning", Oasis' latest album, Dig Out Your Soul is now available, in its entirety, on Guitar Hero. It also happens to be their best album since (What's The Story) Morning Glory, so this is also highly recommended.

The Greatest Albums of My Life

…will be back next week. Stay tuned!

Column End

I'll have a better and longer column next week. Hopefully.

Bye forever.

Jesus FUCKING Christ!!!!! I've heard artists talk a lot of shit before, but the Slipknot dude comparing his mediocre fly-by-night band to Metallica has got to take the cake. Slipknot isn't even in the same ballpark with Korn, let alone Metallica.

Let's see...Slipknot (who ripped off Mushroomhead and Mr. Bungle in appearance, and Fear Factory and Slayer in sound) bigger than Metallica (who combined the way European metal was heading with the current US punk scene, creating an entire genre of music that has branched out to create the two largest styles of heavy music in existence, all the while consistently growing popularity-wise and releasing an album that would go platinum WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF RADIO OR MTV EXPOSURE by the name of Master of Puppets)...yeah, right. They're not even bigger than Poison and Motley Crue are NOW. "But we have good record sales and sold-out tours!" Yeah, and your fanbase are also a bunch of 15-year-old's who discover REAL extreme music a year later and realize how awful you are.

Slipknot made one amazing record, their first. Metallica, at least in this guy's opinion, made 2.5 Master of Puppets is one of metal's best records ever. ...And Justice for All is fucking solid, and the Back Album...well, half of it is good, anyway. The other half led them towards Load, and for that they should never, ever, ever, ever be forgiven.

Either way, Slipknot guy, you're still wrong. Maybe if you had continued to make great records after your debut, I might agree. But as it stands, Iowa was so bad I only gave Vol 3 one spin, and have yet to bother with your new album. Metallica has such name recognition, that we'll all check them out, even AFTER the sacrilegious releases of Load and Re-Load.

Props to Andrew for pointing out Slipknot's ripoff ways, as well. People I know love to bag on Mushroomhead and say they ripped off Slipknot, and this typically makes my head explode from the sheer force of their ignorance.

fair enough chris is talking compete rubbish, but calling slipknot a fly by night band when they've been around way over a decade is beyond stupid

fuck metallica... all they do is piss and moan now and yes all of their albums in the 80s are classics EVERY song on those albums besides whatever ballad they wanted to throw on track 4 sounds the fucking same
