Dancing About Architecture 02.10.09
Posted by Ian Wright on 02.10.2009

The bit at the start

I'm not sure if I've posted this before, I first saw it about a year ago but someone sent me a link to it last week.

It's 18 minutes on a six second drum break which went on to be one of the most important pieces of music of the 20th century.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Jandek – Interstellar Discussion

As gentle an introduction to the Corwood representative as possible.

You news, you lose

Good luck in your future endeavours.

Silver Jews played their final ever show over the weekend in a cavern in Tennessee. I've already written about my disappointment that The Joos are ending so I'll simply post some footage from it.

Intro and the first song

And the last ever Silver Jews live song (until the reunion tour)

More videos.

This time from Radiohead. As I've written before Radiohead were scheduled to play at last night's grammy awards. I had expressed some reservations about it due to the prospect of there being some hellish Radiohead vs. Coldplay collaboration (as opposed to the prospect of a Radiohead vs. Coldplay bloodbath, which would have ruled) but while Thom and the boys did hook up with another musical outfit it was done in a rather cool fashion.

Just ignore the shite talkin' stick figure at the start.

Dude, that's so ....

Fucked Up are set to follow up last year's magnificent The Chemisty of Common Life with the "Year Of The Rat" 12" (which will also be available via download) on March 24. Side A features an epic 11 minute jam that according to label What's Your Rapture?'s press release is not dissimilar to Hawkwind. The b-side "First Born" is a song about the band's singer Pink Eyes becoming a father.

This is the third of a series of Fucked Up releases named after a year in the Chinese animal calendar thing and follows up from last year's Year Of The Pig.

A quick story about Okkervil River

The length of which bears no relation to the huge amount of love that I have for that band.

But I digress. Austin's finest (and that's saying a lot) will release their next single, "Pop Lie" taken from last years' The Stand Ins on April 21st. The b-sides sees OkkRivLeader Will Sheff perform 2 songs solo.

01 Pop Lie
02 Millionaire
03 Pop Lie (One Man Band Version)

Record Store Day v.2

The second annual "Record Store Day" takes place on April 18th with independent record stores around North America (and to a lesser extent the world) holding events to draw attention and trade to them on that date. Getting involved will be super indie Matador which is releasing a series of 7"s exclusive to indie stores, both of which sees recent additions to the Matador stable of artists on one side of the disc.

One will see them covering Beck's "Pay No Mind" with the world's coolest Scientologist taking on the Youth's "Green Light". The other single has Jay Reatard's "Hang Them All" on the a-side and Sonic Youth's "No Garage" on the flip.

Moving on to larger formats Matador are also releasing an LP of a live Pavement gig from Cologne in Germany in 1997.

All three releases will be limited to 2,500 copies.

Just hold steady

Some things just need to be cut and pasted from a MySpace bulletin. This is one of those things.

Vagrant Records and The Hold Steady announce an April 7 release date for A Positive Rage, a double disc package featuring a documentary on DVD and their first-ever live album.

A Positive Rage captures the excitement and high spirits of both the band and their fans in the days surrounding the release of their third full-length, Boys ands Girls in America, and ensuing world tour in 2006.

I can't wait.

The YouTube video of the week

Much as I enjoyed Radiohead's performance. This is pretty hard to top as the definitive grammy performance.

Writing under the influence

Without which this column would not have been possible:

Talk Radio
Handsome Furs – Face Control

The bit at the end

Crystal Antlers were pretty poor last week. Not enough of the wah that cuts through the noise on record. And way too much organ.

I hate Emmanuel Eboue.

Seeing Wavves on Wednesday. Can't wait.

See ya in 7.

Semi permanent plug for my blog. The usual stuff, I wrote more about Jandek last week.

"I hate Emmanuel Eboue."

From your lips to God's ears. Theo Walcott can not get healthy fast enough.
