411Mania Interview: Blue October
Posted by Fred Richani on 02.28.2009

Fred: Justin, you have a new album coming out soon called Approaching Normal, but I wanted to first ask you about your last one Foiled. That was an album that really put you guys on the map. What's it like waking up a Platinum selling recording artist?

Justin: it's the same as it was when I was enjoying my life, except now more people like you want to talk to us and get to do things I probably would have never done. Being Platinum is a goal that's hard to achieve, so that was good, but I have a daughter now so Platinum is not good enough for me. I went from writing a song about suicide in "Hate Me" to talking about it all the time. When my daughter was born, it changed me. I had to grow up.

Fred: So pretty much with all the success you've had, the band manages to stay grounded to an extent?

Justin: Exactly. I'm meeting people that are teaching me how to record the right way. Steve Lillywhite is the producer on this album. I learned so much from him.

Fred: Now that you are Platinum and worked with Steve Lillywhite on Approaching Normal, is there any added pressure?

Justin: I learned so much from a technical person that every single night I'm sitting in my chair practicing like I did when I was a swimmer. I want to be the next Kanye, but better.

Fred: So you want to be rock's version of Kanye?

Justin: Well his album (808s & Heartbreak) really impressed me. I like him a lot because there are a lot of people that play it safe these days and I'm not one of them. Anything I do is practice, practice, practice.

Fred: You guys from what I've seen and heard from your fans are an awesome live band. What is it like when Blue October gets on stage?

Justin: It's fun, man. It's emotional and spiritual. We have really good chemistry and we feed off the crowd.

Fred: Actually, the first time I saw a live performance of the band was on Jimmy Kimmel when you performed on the outdoor stage on crutches. Can you describe that experience?

Justin: I had a broken leg during that time. Actually, I broke it twice. Luckily, I've lost about 50-60lbs since then. We got a lot of our fans to fill that area in order to perform on that stage. They came out in full support.

Fred: What would you say is different about Approaching Normal compared to Foiled? Do you feel like you still have something to prove?

Justin: No, Foiled was asking for approval and asking for forgiveness. Approaching Normal is saying that we don't need your forgiveness. We're trying to show you that there is light at the end of the tunnel and when you reach it, it will be like the best drug you ever took. You'll feel great and no one can anything away from you. The best feeling in the world is to get off your butt and say "Maybe if I stop doing drugs I'll be happy". My brother and I used to blame everything on depression. We're alright now. We're getting ourselves into shape. Yeah, we need to lose weight, but now I can finally run on my leg. It's better than just sitting there drinking alcohol. It's about making the right decision. My daughter being born was a completely life changing experience. I was a selfish man that needed to find something that was not about him to care about.

Fred: Which was your daughter.

Justin: Exactly. I don't know how I'm going to explain to her everything. I became famous off a song ("Hate Me") that talks about killing myself (laughs). It's not a gimmick. There are people out there that feel the same way. When my daughter was born, I just saw her eyes and said "I'm a lucky boy."

Fred: Now I just have one last question for you, Justin. For those reading on 411Mania.com right now, who don't know about Blue October—what can they expect?

Justin: Bipolar hard rock with light at the end of the tunnel.

Consent to Treatment is one of the best albums I have ever heard, Steve Lillywhite should only make them even better.

RE: the genius "The Guest's" comment.

Dude, unless the world is begging for your opinion... (Which it isn't) Why bother posting at all? Please, FOADIAF... Dolt.

And, being that the interwebs ARE begging for "My input." (As is your girlfriend.)

I for one am stoked for this new release!

I am really excited to hear the new album and the new direction Blue is headed!!

I can't wait for the album & it's so good to hear Justin & Jeremy & all doing so well for each other. Depression does keep you down, but yes it can be changed to an extent when ya stop being selfish & foolish. I never realized how selfish I had been until I started letting all my emotions come out listening to Blue. I'm still struggling with the depression, but have learned it's just part of me & deal with it. I know it's a lot to do with what I've been thru, but it's part of my chemical makeup, too, no matter how hard I try. So, WAY to go Justin for getting your life together so your daughter can grow up looking into your eyes.

Why waste your time posting for a band you think sucks!?! Makes NO sense whatsoever

Posted By: ??? (Guest)  on March 09, 2009 at 10:08 PM

It's so great things are looking up for you guys. It's so hard pulling out of depression & it takes a lot of strength & kicks in the ass. I didn't realize I had been so selfish until I started facing up to my feelings & what I've done. I always had an excuse. I can't wait for the album guys! It can't come quick enough.

Blue October Kick Ass In Concert & Are A Great Group Of Guys!!!!

I have been fortunate to see them in concert twice now and to meet all members except for Justin. They were very polite..nice...despite being exhausted they took the time to talk to me and my son.

I wish them nothing but the best with this new album!!!!

There are a lot of people out there that don't like Blue October, my son is one of them. I respesct their opinion as I hope they respect mine. Blue October is an amazing band and have made an amazing journey in their career. Their music literally saved me while going through a very difficult time with an addict husband and subsequent divorce. I related to them in a way that I didn't get form anywhere else. Hate Me was an eerie depiction of where my marriage was, that song was my life for a time. Chameleon Boy was my husband. Regardless of what people think about Blue October, they are real, you can't ask for more than that. Keep it up guys you are the light at the end of the tunnel.

Blue October is an amazing band... you can feel emotion in all of their songs. They are my escape. I am excited to hear the new album to see how it is different from their original stuff. I'm exicted for them that their last album went platinum, but I don't like that they are becoming more and more popular. I like small intimate concerts and those will be no more if they continue to catch on.

Posted By: Maggie (Guest)  on March 19, 2009 at 04:45 PM

I really liked this interview!!! Especially loved how justin describes blue october for those that havent heard of them before. They are definitely been my light at the end of my personal tunnel. In all honesty, I wouldnt be here breathing today if it wasnt for them. For the past 6 or so years Blue has got me through a whole bunch of shit and I cannot wait till march 24 when Approaching Normal is released. If you have never heard Blue October please have a listen, I promise they will change your life.

I first saw Blue October at Bocktoberfest in TX 3 years ago and they blew me away. I've seen them 11 times since. They played at Stubbs in Austin when Justin broke his leg and they still ROCKED! Their albums just keep getting better.

Unlike the short commentary of the last user, I think Blue October is amazing. Tomorrow's release of their new Album, Approaching Normal, will be the first opportunity for many people to experience the kind of maturity that most of the fans that have been around since before the "History for Sale" days have noticed in the last 5 or 6 years alone. This will be a momentous album.

I love Blue October so much. All of their work has helped me through so many hard times, and I am sure it will continue to. Justin has the voice of an angel, and I love how all of them just 'fit' together. And I still think that PRN off of Argue With A Tree, is a truly touching and talented solo. Keep rockin out guys, we'll always be here to support you =]

I LOVE Blue October! LOL I know music this band is the absolute "frackin" best since The Beatles, Ok I brought BSG into the mix and I have to tip a hat to Bear McCreary! However, Blue October is on third dimensional level and this band is awesome!

Congratulations to the boys of Blue October for an amazing new album! I have been a fan of Blue October for years now and listen to their music nonstop. After going to the concert at HOB Anaheim on Sunday and hearing them play Approaching Normal from beginning to end and now listening to it again today, you can just tell that Justin is an a much happier place in his life. It is a completely new sound for the boys and it is fabulous. More dancy , yet still nice and dark, exactly what i love about Blue October. I am so excited to keep listening to this album and excited to see what else the boys have to offer!

I absolutely love Justin's description of the music Blue October plays - "Bipolar hard rock with light at the end of the tunnel". I think this is a good article to read because you learn stuff you did not already know and i recommend this band to everyone that is looking for something new! Approaching Normal is the new album and a must buy!

These guys are absolutely amazing. They have provided music that so many people have been able to relate to, myself included. There is always that ONE SPECIAL song that fits whatever I happen to be going through at that time..THE SONG that is the only reason I was able to make it through that situation. Not a day goes by that I don't listen to them. And every time I listen to their music I find a different meaning to the song.. it all depends on what is happening at that moment. Their's is a true talent that will be around for a long long time!

The record is amazing. It's solid from start to finish, with moments throughout that I'll be coming back to for years. Lyrically, Justin's hitting his stride for sure.

If you think they suck, you are either from Oklahoma or your name rhymes with Schmark ScFern. Either way, Dancing with the starts is on somewhere...run along.

To the true loyal, or perhaps the ones who can't emote like Justin can, who need this outlet, or just lovers of pushing musical bounds, this is a great record for you. CTT is better, yes but this is a phenomenal achievement.

Justin is one of the greatest lyrical minds of our generation. Anything he does rocks. The old albums rock! The new album rocks! Even this interview rocks!

Blue October is an amazing band. I like how Justin calls it 'bipolar hard rock with a light at the end of the tunnel'....perfect discription. I think Foiled, consent to treatment and espically now, apporaching normal really show that.

You've touched my life in more ways than you'll ever know. Approaching Normal is lighter than your last cd's, but it's happy, and I am ready for it. Thank you for your inspiration!

This is a great album. A must have in any true music fans collection. This album has something for everyone what ever your pleasure. The lyrics are great the music is awsome. Blue October is one of the best bands to come along. I listen to this album over and over and love it each more everyday. They have truly outdone them selves. "Jump Rope" is a great human anthem that deserves to be played through out the soundtrack in our lives. Great ALBUM!

What a great interview! I really appreciate that Justin and the band are making efforts to stay real and stay close to their fans, even after going platinum. I -love- Approaching Normal, something in every song speaks to me and helps me keep my chin up through the hard times. I can't wait to see these guys live, and hope to meet them one day so I can thank them for their amazing contributions to the music world.

I like many different types of music but Blue October is the only one that has touched my heart and pierced my soul. I can relate to so much of there music and lyrics. I had a huge problem with drugs and right after I got clean the song "hate me" came out. It got me through a lot needless to say. As well as songs in the new album Approaching Normal.

Saw BO last year at the Hard Rock in Biloxi. They absolutely rocked and left an impression on me forever! Just got the new album and as expected...Perfect! Will be catching BO at the House of Blues in New Orleans on 4-20. Can't wait! Bringing my friends so they too can experience and be turned on by our generation's Pink Floyd!

Don't make me get the hose out son...

These guys have integrity. That is something few bands can claim. They are HONEST. The songs aren't gimmicks. More so than any songwriter I have ever seen, Justin really exposes himself. Pure honesty.

Fuck Guest. He fucking sucks. My cock.

This band has compleatly changed my life. almost the same exact story happened to me :l I wasnt on drugs or nothing but I had been increadbly depressed when my dad left like 4 years ago. Im 13 now but my little sister Zoe (who is 18 months now) was born and I just held her and cryed because she was the one that really pulled me out of depression.. Then I got into Blue October and I could relate more to it then got like obsessed lol. And I really like the songs Blue Does and Blue Skies, thouse songs really speak how I feel about Zoe :) Thank you Justin, I really appreciate your hard work and I dont think you need to keep practicing, your perfect the way you play. I love you so much Justin :) Hope to see you live soon in Vegas
