Dancing About Architecture 03.03.09
Posted by Ian Wright on 03.03.2009

The bit at the start

I don't want to harp on about Primavera again after last week but the final headliner for the festival was announced on Friday and they've really landed themselves a doozey. The main stage on the Saturday will see Sonic Youth warming the crowd up for Neil Morthfuckin' Young.

I've never seen him play live before so the news that he's playing brought quite a skip to my step and a flutter in my heart. In fact I've spent about 20 minutes on Sunday night figuring out how to play "The Needle And The Damage Done" just in case the dude misses his flight or somethgn and the masses need to be entertained and consoled.

I figure I could jam that sum'bitch out to 2 or 3 hours with a little effort.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Rollarskate Skinny – Horsedrawn Wishes

Shoegavey brilliance from Kevin Shields' brother's band.

You news, you lose

Roger.

It's been almost 2 years since Wilco's massively disappointing Sky Blue Sky and Jeff and the boys are prepping work on their 8th record. There's no title as yet but some song titles have confirmed. "Wilco, the song" (which was performed on the Colbert Report late last year) "Deeper Down", "My Country Has Disappeared", "Sunny Feeling", and "One Wing" are all likely parts of the tracklist. According to Rolling Stone much of the album was recorded last month in New Zealand when a number of the band travelled down there to work on an upcoming Neil Finn charity record. The album is being produced by Jim Scott who has worked with the band before in a mixing capacity.

In other Wilco news the band's upcoming Ashes of American Flags live DVD is coming out late next month but as part of the record store day activities you should be able to pick it up earlier if you try out an independent store on April 18th.

Dancing in The Field.

Yesterday and today is the forthcoming second album from Axel Wilner a.k.a. The Field. It's out on May 25th in Europe and the following day in North America on supreme Berlin dance label kompakt.

According to the label the album is "more organic" than it's predecessor and will feature a guest spot from Battles' John Stanier.

Wilner is playing with a band these days and was in Dublin last month. I wasn't able to make it that night but some friends of mine were in attendance and from their reports the new record shouldn't disappoint if you enjoyed From Here We Go Sublime.

New Neu! tribute.

Sonic Youth, LCD Soundsystem, Foals. These are the sort of names that you might expect to crop up on a tribute to krautrock duo Neu!. But Oasis? Maybe not so much. Nonetheless all 4 bands as well as a number of others will be on Brand Neu! which Feraltone will release on May 11th.

It's a mix of previously released material by Ciccone (nee Sonic) Youth and Oasis as well as exclusives from bands like School Of Seven Bells. The comp also features material from both of Neu!'s members.

Tracklist:

01 Ciccone Youth (Sonic Youth): "Two Cool Rock Chicks Listening to Neu!"
02 Primal Scream: "Shoot Speed / Kill Light"
03 Pets with Pets: "We Only Found This Place"
04 Oasis: "I Can See It Now"
05 Foals: "Titan Arum"
06 Cornelius: "Wataridori"
07 Holy Fuck: "Super Inuit"
08 LCD Soundsystem: "Watch the Tapes"
09 Kasabian: "Stuntman"
10 School of Seven Bells: "Device fuer M"
11 Fujiya & Miyagi: "Electro Karaoke"
12 Hook & the Twin: "They'll Get Your Head"
13 La Duesseldorf: "Sketch 1_08"
14 Michael Rother: "Neutronics 98"

Passionate about Pits.

Buzz band of '09 Passion Pit have announced details of their debut album and follow up to their Chunk Of Change EP. It's going to be called Manners and it's out on May 26th in North America on French Kiss and on Columbia in the UK on the 18th.

Tracklisting:

01 Make Light
02 Little Secrets
03 Moth's Wings
04 The Reeling
05 Eyes as Candles
06 Swimming in the Flood
07 Folds in Your Hands
08 To Kingdom Come
09 Sleepyhead
10 Let Your Love Grow Tall
11 Seaweed Song

Forkfest

Chicago's Union Park will play host to this year's (and the 4th overall) Pitchfork Music Festival. Details are really thin on the ground right now but it's taking place from July 17-19 and tickets for it will go on sale on Friday, March 13th.

Wow, that was a quick one.

Jesus, Lizard

More record store day goodness. April 18th will see the release of Inch, a 7" box set of out of print material from The Jesus Lizard. As with all the other record store day things it'll be an exclusive to independent record stores.

All of the material on the box set has been out of print for at least 6 years so the news is a bit of a boon for fans of the Chicago rockers. Remastered by Bob Weston of Shellac (and more recently of Mission Of Burma) and coming in a "foldable clear plastic package" (wow) and including the JL half of a split 7" they did with Nirvana as well as "Gladiator", which the band gave away at a 1992 London show and was never sold elsewhere (eBay dudes are weeping as that news spreads, bang goes the kids college funds, but if you were relying on sending your kid to college thanks to an indie bands' vinyl then your pretty fucked, well unless you're Jack White).

Inch:

A Chrome
B 7 vs. 8

A Mouthbreather
B Sunday You Need Love

A Wheelchair Epidemic
B Dancing Naked Ladies

A Gladiator (live)
B Seasick (live)

A Puss

Lash 3x7":

A Glamorous
B Deaf as a Bat
A Lady Shoes (live)
B Killer McHann (live)
A Bloody Mary (live)
B Monkey Trick (live)

A (Fly) On (the Wall)
B White Hole
