Woman Fined Nearly $2 Million In Filesharing Case

$800,000 for a Richard Marx song, hope it was "Right Here Waiting"!
A Minnesota jury has ruled that 32-year old Jammie Thomas-Rasset owes $1.92 million to the four major labels after downloading and sharing 24 songs. That's $80,000 per track.
"We are pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable," RIAA spokeswoman Cara Duckworth said in a statement.
Thomas-Rasset was fined $220,000 in 2007, but that verdict was thrown out for technical reasons. The re-trial amount surely doesn't help. Still, the woman may still not have to put up the full amount. "Since day one, we have been willing to settle this case and we remain willing to do so," RIAA's Duckworth said.
Thomas used peer-to-peer network Kazaa to download the files in question. Despite the 1700 files in her library, she was only charged for 24 of them, including tracks by Green Day, Janet Jackson, Godsmack and Richard Marx.
No BS...I was part of the jury pool for this case in 2007. It's so weird seeing this all over national news.

That is excessive and frankly absurd.

Time for an identity change.

And who's going to see that $80,000 per song? Sure as hell not the artists that recorded them!

Thank god the American Legal System is here to protect the poor persecuted little record labels from the big bad scary American Citizens!

I feel bad for this woman... she downloaded Richard Marx

I love these verdicts because they make the RIAA look like the heartless assholes they really are. This bullshit just justifies filesharing as civil disobedience.

I guess Richard Marx will be right here waiting....for his money

Good God! I think the RIAA's finally gone too far. "Filesharing is stealing" my ass! Hell I remember having the old Napster on my CPU, I would download some new songs, and if I liked them, I'd run out and buy the CD. This is just plain uncalled for though. I feel sorry for this chick, I really do.

The judgment is excessive and ridiculous. But to be fair, and I am serious, have you guys seen pictures of this woman? The judgment is excessive, yes, but it is hard to feel sorry for someone as fat and homely as her. She is just lucky they don't pass the law I keep pushing for, and that is to have a hunting season for beasts like her.

She is a very unfortunate looking woman(if that is what she, or it, actually is).
So, yeah, based on her looks she totally deserves it.
