Public Enemy Relying On Fans To Record New Album
Posted by Aaron Mayagoitia on 10.06.2009

Public Enemy's new album will be funded by fans. The rap group has signed a deal with SellaBand, a fan funding engine, and are aiming to raise $250,000 in increments of $25 in order to record and release an as-yet-untitled album.

Fans who invest in the project will receive a share in the revenue of the album and a numbered copy of it.

"SellaBand's financial engine model goes about restructuring the music business in reverse," Public Enemy's Chuck D explained. "It starts with fans first, then the artists create from there. The music business is built on searching for fans and this is a brand new way for acts to create a new album with fans first, already on board."

$250k? That's a lot of crack. $25 says you won't see any return on your money.

Do they offer a money back guarantee if the record sucks?

HAHAHA. As IF any fan will see a fucking DIME of that. And mixing, mastering and recording studios don't cost $250k unless there's some shady business going on.

This is by far the dumbest move I've ever heard a recording artist do. ever.

I saw them live at Bonnaroo this year, they still got it!!! My $25 is going there way just to get another record out.
