New movie looking to run until Thanksgiving, still not enough to top Miley Cyrus...
Michael Jackson's This Is It was the #1 movie in the US this weekend. The film brought in $21.3 million in the US and an estimated $101 million worldwide since it opened on Thursday. Sony is already talking about extending the movie's theater run past two weeks and keeping it in theaters until Thanksgiving. The studio paid $60 million for the rights to the movie.
This It It earned $10.4 million in Japan, $6.3 million in Germany, $5.8 million in France and $3.2 million in China. The film earned $7.6 million in the UK, the home of the planned "This Is It" performances.
There was talk that This Is It would be the best selling concert movie ever, but 2008's Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert earned $31.1 million in its first weekend. There is still hope that Jackson's movie will surpass the $65.3 million domestic total of Cyrus'. It's already surpassed Miley's $70 million global total.
