Judge Shuts Down "Sublime"
Posted by Michael Melchor on 11.04.2009

Los Angeles Judge Howard Matz has shut down an effort by former bandmembers of Sublime to perform under the name. The preliminary injunction was issued in a trademark lawsuit brought by the estate of former (and deceased) lead singer Bradley Nowell.

Surviving band members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, recently played under the old moniker at the "SmokeOut" Festival despite legal threats from Nowell's estate. Now, Matz asked attorneys for the estate-Howard Weitzman, Jeremiah Reynolds and Randall Whattoff of Santa Monica's Kinsella Weitzman firm-to draw up a written injunction for him to sign based on:
Using the "Sublime" name and trademark (or anything similar) in connection with any live performances or "musical sound recordings;"
Using the "Sublime" name or trademark on any clothing, posters, books related to music, calendars, decals or stickers;
Using any Internet domain name containing the "Sublime" name or trademark, or any other confusingly similar domain name.

It was a dumb idea anyway. Just come up with a new name. Something not corny like "Long Beach Dub All Stars." Call it fucking 'Santeria' or something.

Fuck it....they suck now anyway. Bradley was the band, everyone else was an after thought. The family is basically making the point that Sublime doesn't exist without him.

Bradley would not have approved of this. I believe he would want his friends to go on as Sublime if they had the passion and desire to do so.
