Gwen Stefani, Bon Jovi Joining Bar Lawsuits
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 11.22.2009
If you wanna play "You Give Love A Bad Name", you gotta pay...
It came up last week that Taylor Swift was involved in a copyright infringement suit against a bar in Idaho for playing her (and other's) music without paying royalties.
It looks like Gwen Stefani and Bon Jovi are involved in a similar suit against a bar in Minnesota called Sally's Saloon & Eatery. Gwen, Bon Jovi and others are seeking royalties and forcing Sally's to quit playing their music, as they never secured proper licensing.
This .. THIS is what makes me not give a shit about piracy.

I'm sorry what?
You have to pay royalties just to play the music in a bar?
Go to hell!

Boo fuckin' hoo.

Hurray for greedy artists!

Just another reason for me to say "Fuck Bon Jovi."

are you for real? So they can't turn on the radio without ponying up cash? Don't artists realize its exposure for their music.

Am I missing something? Why can't the bar play the music?
Posted By: confysed (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 04:08 PM
thats some bs

Are these motherfuckers not rich enough? Does it not occur to them that people might here their music in these palces and go out and get the CD's? It's free fucking advertising!!! I expected more from Jon.
Posted By: Sigh (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 04:17 PM
WTF!!!! Don't they make enough fucking money.
Posted By: Guest#2828 (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 04:18 PM
I realize that most people have no idea how things in the world work, and will blame these particular artists themselves and not their management...
But seriously. Management. You're all a bunch of douche bags.
Posted By: Guest#1722 (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 04:26 PM
WTF is that shit. Greedy fucks seriously it's not like they are selling your music to people when they enter the bar. They play it on the jukebox.

i miss the days when you could freely listen to music without some millionaire wanting to milk an extra 6 cents for you doing so.
Posted By: Guest#0158 (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 04:59 PM
I thought it was called a f'n jukebox or satellite radio....
Posted By: g (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 05:33 PM
what a bunch of fucktards. this shit is getting out of fucking hand. if they bought the damn cd then they should be able to play the damn song regardless of what the fucking artist say.

Bon Jovi is looking pretty buff in that picture right there.

This is just ridculous. Are these songs being played through a juke box? Are the just played over the speakers in the bar from the cd? This needs to be explained better .
Wuld this mean if I buhgt the cd and took it to a party to play it I would have to get permission from those artists first?
DO these artists pay royalties when they play someone elses song in concert? Wouldnt that sort of be the same thing?
The lawsuit makes absolutley no sense at all.

Is this bands in these bars covering their stuff, or is this jukenoxes, or what? In any case, it remains that I hate the music industry a little more with each passing day.

Lars Ulrich, part 2.

Bon Jovi sure is looking buff in that picture.

I hope all these "artists" suffer horrible accidents. This is the most greedy and pathetic thing I've ever read.

Now I'm glad Kanye caused Swift some trouble.

Okay, I'm pretty sure this post is a pathetic attempt at writing news. What I can only assume is that the bars in question used these artists songs in some form of advertising for their establishments. That's the only way they could get sued for not properly securing licensing.
Every radio station in the U.S. is properly licensed to play the music they do. As are each of the jukebox distributors. So other than advertising, I see no possiblr way how these lawsuits could exist.
Just to prove a point: I'm driving to my local bar right now and will walk in playing "Livin on a Prayer" on my Iphone speaker. Come at me, John. Come at me.

This is why the Music industry needs to die and bereplaced with something that cares about human life

You mean there is a chance I can go into a bar and never hear "Holla Back Girl"...I back this lawsuit of frivolity whole heartedly!
Posted By: trs (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 08:25 PM
This is why I'm proud to say I haven't legally bought a music album in nearly ten years.

Guess I will owe a lot of money to people who's music I have been letting Ritchie Cunningham, Ralph Malph, and Potsie Webber play thought the years. Damn you kids and your "rock n roll" music.

"DO these artists pay royalties when they play someone elses song in concert? Wouldnt that sort of be the same thing?"
Yes actually. The bar at which you they are playing or venue needs to have obtained a license in advance for this matter (I forget how much, it recently went up, but they play a flat fee).
They and also stores have to pay a fee to play music on the radio. Its considered benefiting the store for commercial purposes and they therefor are able to force a license. Dumb as hell and they actually employ people to go to bars and stores recording music that plays and then check to see if they have the license.

Oh sugar. I hummed a few bars of "Livin' on a Prayer" the other day without obtaining the expressed written consent from Bon Jovi and their management.

. . . WHAT?! Man, and I thought Lars Ulrich was a douchebag.
Due to this steaming load of horseshit, I officially forgive both Lars Ulrich, for killing Napster, and Kanye West, for subjecting Taylor Swift to his racism at the VMAs.
I guess this is why all of the bars in my town have those satellite jukeboxes now.

This cant hold up in court . For one thing when you go to a bar ,its usually not because of the music they are playing . Its to drink. Unless in a commercial ,the bar is not using the music to make money . The alcohol is the money maker in bars not the music.
Posted By: Guest#3728 (Guest) on November 23, 2009 at 02:26 AM
He is sueing a band called blonde jovi a drink called mijovi and this bar. The blonde girl cover band is being sued and they are obviously fans. I think he should sue carnival cruise lines for saying bon voyage..maybe he already is. Don't buy his music or go to concerts. He's a dick period.
