Carly Simon Reveals Who's So Vain
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 02.26.2010
After 40 years, the secret is out!
Carly Simon swore she would take the secret with her to her grave, but the subject of her signature song "You're So Vain" has been revealed after 40 years.
Carly confessed that the name of the person is whispered in the acoustic version of the song, which is on her upcoming Never Been Gone disc. Sources say that the name of record label boss David Geffen is whispered backwards in the song.
Rumours had always focused on the song being aimed at an ex, possibly Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty.
Jeez, some forty years later, huh?! Man, I'll bet that one guy who still cared will be blown away.

She vowed she would take the secret to her grave . . . or until she needed album sales.

She never said to HER death.
Just the death of artistic integrity.
Still, I think it was about me.

In 2003, an auction was held on Martha's Vineyard where one of the lots was the chance to know just who "You're so Vain" was referring to. Dick Ebersol, president of NBC won with a bid of $50,000. To be fair, he's loaded, it was for a good cause and he was also given a private performance by Simon.
The stipulation to Ebersol's winning bid was that he had to sign an agreement promising that he would never reveal the identity of the person to anyone, ensuring that no one who doesn't have $50,000 to spend on the answer to a trivia question will even know the truth.
He was, however, allowed to give the least useful clue of all time: The person's name had the letter E in it. Thanks, Dick.
Well this serves him right for that shitty clue.
