Jay-Z Urges People To Get Behind New NBA Arena, Community Protests
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 03.12.2010

Yesterday in Brooklyn, developers broke ground on the new arena for the Nets at the controversial Atlantic Yards site. A huge crowd of people gathered outside the media event to protest. The new arena has forced many area residents to lose their homes and has shut down some local businesses, as well.

Both Spike Lee and Jay-Z were at the ceremony. Jay said, "What I stand here and represent is hope for Brooklyn, New York City. I'm a son of Brooklyn, I'm from Marcy projects. I think about growing up in Brooklyn in the Marcy projects and shooting jump shots, thinking I can make it to the NBA. Now I stand here as an owner of team that's coming back to Brooklyn."

Jay-Z later said in an interview, "This project, when you look at the numbers at the end of the day, was so overwhelmingly in favor of the people: the job creation, the housing that's being built. It was difficult; you had to tread through that process lightly."

The 'housing' they are building isn't like the Marcy's. That is my neighborhood. They are tearing down affordable brownstones and putting up sky rise apartments for rich people who want to escape from Manhattan. They are turning a nice neighborhood in Brooklyn into a circus. I wonder what Jay would have said if they were tearing down the Marcy's. Personally, I would prefer it.

I agree with THESTONE, I live in NYC and they are not helping anyone they removing people from there homes closing businesses to build Sky Rises for people with money while forcing people to try and find affordable housing when there seems to be nothing affordable in NYC any more. A stadium isn't necessary now. There closing hospitals, Schools and there going to lay off police officers back to when NYC had a high amount of murders, and they are taking away children transportation passes to get to school and back home. I went to a community meeting on the discussion on affordable homes and the minimum was a 1million dollars for affordable homes. Lets tear down the Marcy houses where Jay Z beloved projects robbed. So many other places in NYC especially Brooklyn why force people out there homes and leave them jobless?
