Days before the band's SXSW set...
Alex Chilton, known for his influential work with bands the Box Tops and Big Star, died on March 17 at the age of 59.
According to longtime friend John Fry, owner of Memphis-based Ardent Studios, Chilton passed away at a hospital in New Orleans after experiencing what appeared to be heart problems. Fry said: "It was just a sudden and unexpected event."
Chilton was scheduled to perform with Big Star SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 20.
411 Music wishes to send its condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Alex Chilton.
It would be sad if no one commented on this. People probably have heard the Replacement's song about him while in line at Wal-Mart. Or at least they heard of him through the 70's show theme song, before CheapTrick did it. R.I.P

Alex was one of the best. Anyone who hasn't heard those early Big Star albums and likes classic rock like Beatles, Beach Boys, Kinks, Cheap Trick, etc...owes it to themselves to check them out.

This is horrible news. Chilton was so gifted as a songwriter, having a terrific knack for lush melody & harmony. Somewhere, Paul Westerberg is weeping.
**puts on "Third/Sister Lovers"**
