Christian Music Star Jennifer Knapp: "I'm gay"
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 04.14.2010

Jennifer Knapp, once a rising star in the Christian Music world, is back from a seven year hiatus with her new album, Letting Go (out May 11th).

The album contains a few surprises for Knapp's fans. For one, she seems to be leaving the Christian Music genre behind in favor of regular rock and pop. And second, Knapp has now revealed that she is a lesbian.

The rumors had been swirling since 2003, when Knapp suddenly left the public eye and the country, traveling to Australia, where she eventually settled down. After ten years of abstinence, she entered into a same-sex relationship. But Knapp is private about her private life, and says her American girlfriend has no desire to become famous.

Knapp, now 36, dated men during her college days, and is braced for a backlash from religious fans who faithfully shot down the rumors about her sexuality over the years.

Still, she said, "I'm definitely getting a lot more friendly winks from the girls than I have in the past!"

The lifestyle change is the biggest reason for Knapp's musical change in direction, too. "I just wouldn't find it respectful at all to say, 'Hey, this is something that you want in your store next to your Jesus statue,'" she said. "It would just be disingenuous to try and convince someone that they needed to do that."

Knapp says she still considers herself a "person of faith". "I hope that the defiance does come across as humble," she explained. "If there's any frustration, it's trying to politely break the yoke of being asked to be something that I just can't be, and with all humility go: 'Just please be kind when you discover the truth.' It's kinda all you can do."

As a Christian, I'd like to say that I'm proud of her. In today's world, a lot of folks are quick to judge, and its just senseless.

I once had a lesbian girl ask me if I thought she was going to hell.

I told her that was between her and God, it has nothing to do with me.

But, after years of being who she was, I just hope for her to have strength, because not everyone is as understanding about stuff as they should be.

I think it's great! Kudos to ya girl ;) and it's not a publicity stunt to admit your gay when your in the music biz. Letting the world know who you really are is braver than the hipocrit's that run around in Nashville, lol's ..Cheers Jen!

It is my hope that many more gays and lesbians in Christianity will stand up and speak out, God loves Gays as much he loves heterosexuals. Jennifer Knapps ends speculation and there is no doubt in my mind that she will be welcomed with inner peace and joy, knowing that she doesnt have to carry the burden of lying about who she loves and want to spent time with.

For the bible bashing people, know that God's ineffable love surpasses any hatred.

We are often concerned with the way people comment on the issue of homosexuality. Many people are ignorant on the definition of homosexuality. This is a fact that we must appreciate, we are all children of God, a homosexual is a person who is sexually, emotionally, spiritually and physically attracted to people of his or her own sex.

You can be gay and still love God, let me quote a great man, teacher, Prophet Rev Dr Troy D Perry, the founder of the Metropolitan Community Church who said "The Lord is my Shepherd and He knows I am gay".

Jennifer you will be in our prayers for the forseeable future, because I know that coming out with the burden of success in Christian Music can be a challenge.

At our churches in Lagos Nigeria and London UK, we would pray for you as you continue your journey of reconciliation with God and who you are.

More love more power. Revd Rowland Jide Macaulay
