He actually thought it was clever...
Gotye has explained his recent comments in which he criticized Glee's cover of his hit "Somebody That I Used To Know", according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He originally said that the show's recording style was "dry" and that it sounded "like it's playing to you from a cardboard box." He then called parts of the song "dinky and wrong."
He gave a private performance for Los Angeles station 98.7 at Hollywood's Sayers Club on Monday. He told radio jock Kennedy and a crowd of less than 100 (which included Rumer Willis, American Idol winner Kris Allen and Audrina Patridge) that "the nature of using reverb and space in a recording can change your perception of how a sound appeals to you."
About the Glee cover, he said he was referring to "this xylophone hook in my song -- it's kind of dinky not just in the cover version but the original song. [Somehow] that becomes the Glee cover I hated and Darren Criss is an asshole."
He then praised the cover and added: "I thought it was really clever to transpose the song to two guys ... It was a great idea."
At the concert, he decided not to play the song for the audience, which included fans, radio station contest winners and those in the industry.
