Death Sentence Overturned for Killer of Dave Navarro's Mother

A glitch in the trial…
The man who was convicted of killing Dave Navarro's mother won't be executed. LAist reports that John Riccardi, who was Connie Hopkins Navarro's girlfriend at the time of her death and was convicted in 1994 of shooting her to death in 1983, was taken off death row by the California Supreme Court today.
According to the Court Riccardi, who is now seventy-six, was denied a fair trial when the judge " erroneously excused a prospective juror during jury selection." Riccardi was accused of killing Navarro and then went on the run, getting arrested after a viewer tip-off from an episode of America's Most Wanted.
Navarro told AMW in 2004 that he was supposed stay with his mother on the night of the murder, but stayed at his father's house instead at the last minute. He believes he would have been killed if he had gone to his mother's and said, "So I really do believe that that's some sort of divine intervention that I can't explain."
