Primus To Debut 3D Tour In October

It will be "trippy"...
Billboard reports that Primus will debut a 3D tour on October 12 in Poughkeepsie, New York, which will consist of 21 dates. The shows will use a 3D backdrop screen and a quadraphonic sound system for what Les Claypool says is a "really trippy" experience "for the head".
He used the 3D system first for a 2008 New Year's Eve show at the San Francisco Opera House. He said: "It's a pretty adventurous undertaking. Had we not done it once before, I'd be a little skeptical. But the show we did at the San Francisco Opera House was pretty amazing, and the notion of touring it seems to be an even more amazing concept, so we're doing it."
When fans enter the venues they will be handed 3D goggles. Claypool said that he and his fellow band members (guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde and drummer Jay Lane) have a plan to "actually turn around during improv sections (of the songs) and sort of jam along with our visualist" and images that are being created especially for the tour.
He added: "The past couple of years, Primus has gotten pretty psychedelic. We keep joking that we're bringing acid rock back to the masses, and I think this is another enhancing element of that. Every show will be different. Different environments, as far as venues, are going to lend themselves to different experiences, depending on where you are and whatnot in the crowd. It's very heady. People that are going to be moshing around probably won't get any of this, but the heads will get it."
The 3D technology for the tour was developed by 3D Live, a Burbank, Calif.-based outgrowth of George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic. Claypool says the first set of tour dates will be a dry run and the band is "working to potentially expand it, depending on how it goes. It's one of those things. We've got to see how it goes."
The band is still promoting their 2011 Green Naugahyde, their first in 12 years. The group will put out a 5.1 SurroundSound reissue of 1991's Sailing the Seas of Cheese in the fall, but don't have plans for new music.
Claypool said: "We haven't really been working on anything new at this point. We haven't even really been talking about it. We've still been kind of hammering away at this record. It's been a very pleasant record to play. It flows really well, so it's been a good one to hammer away on. I doubt we'll take as long (to make the next album) but we're not on the 18-month schedule."
