Fan Dies At Linkin Park Concert
Posted by Joseph Lee on 11.08.2012

News24 reports that a woman died just before a Linkin Park concert yesterday in Cape Town, South Africa when a structure collapsed at Cape Town Stadium. The City of Cape Town has secured the site and police are investigating. Both the city and the organizers of the event, Big Concerts, will cooperate. The city will also launch its own investigation according to spokesperson Kylie Hatton.

The woman died of her injured after the temporary scaffolding collapsed in high winds. She died after being taken to Christian Barnard Memorial Hospital. Nineteen people total were injured and twelve needed to be hospitalized.

The structure was a "branding activation" and was next to the stadium forecourt on the Cape Town CBD side of the venue. It had been pre-approved and certified as safe before the concert. Hatton said the investigation would see if the approval procedures were done right, and she added she didn't have permission yet to release the woman's name from her family.

Big Concerts posted a message on its Facebook page, offering its "deepest sympathies and condolences" to the people injured and the woman who died. They wrote: "We would like to thank the City of Cape Town, the SA Police Services, and all the medics, doctors, and disaster risk personnel for their swift and professional response to this accident."

Linkin Park also commented on the situation with a statement on their official website. They said: "Following our performance... at Cape Town Stadium, we were advised that several people were injured as a result of the collapse of an advertising tower erected by Lucozade in the parking area outside the venue. We wish to express our deep sadness and concern for those injured and our heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries. Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy."

The band will next perform in Johannesburg on November 10.
