Madonna To Be Put On Trial For Supporting Gay Rights In Russia
Posted by Joseph Lee on 11.10.2012

The Times (via NME) reports that Madonna is going to be sued for supporting gay rights during her MDNA tour in Russia.

In August, she angered some citizens by giving out pink anti-homophobia wristbands to the crowd at a show in St. Petersberg and telling them to "fight for the right to be free". This was a response to a new policy in St. Petersburg in March which saw the annual gay pride parade banned as it promoted "gay lifestyles" and the "propagation of homosexuality", which have both been outlawed.

A lawsuit was filed by members of the Union of Russian Citizens, the People's Assembly and the New Great Russia party against Madonna. A lawyer for the group claims her actions caused "psychological stress and emotional shock" for her audience.

A court in St. Petersburg has granted their approval for the $11.9 million suit to continue, because Madonna "crossed a line" by handing out the bracelets to "children as young as 12". Madonna did not attend the hearing and will not be at future court dates for the trial.

She created controversy in her entire Russian tour. She used a show in Moscow to voice her support of Pussy Riot. In a speech to the 20,000 people in the audience, she said: "I think they have paid the price for this act and I pray for their freedom." She then stripped to her bra, showed off the words "Pussy Riot" on her back and wore a balaclava similar to those worn by the band. She was later called a "moralizing slut" by Russian politician Dmitry Rogozin.
