Major Harris of the Delfonics Passes Away
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 11.11.2012

Billboard reports that Major Harris, a former member of the "Philadelphia sound" group the Delfonics, died on Friday from congestive heart and lung failure. Harris was 65.

Harris in 1975 had his own hit, "Love Won't Let Me Wait."

Harris grew up in a musical family. His father was a guitarist and his mother led the church choir. According to his sister, "He always appeared to be older, which gave him a lot of ins to a lot of older places."

Music was Harris' life also according to his sister.

Harris also worked in several music groups in the 1960's including the Charmers, Frankie Lymon's Teenagers, and Nat Turner's Rebellion.

Harris became a part of the Delfonics in the early 1970's where he replaced Randy Cain in the group. He left the group in 1974 to pursue a solo music career. He did a string of R&B singles, and "Love Won't Let Me Wait' peaked at number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was written by Vinnie Barrett and Bobby Eli and became a certified gold record.

Harris' last live performance was at a 2011 reunion show with some of the members of the Delfonics.
