Google Play Criticized By UK Record Industry Body
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 11.13.2012

Google Play is trying to make inroads into foreign markets, but one UK record industry body says the service "doesn't make sense." The BBC reports that the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) took a shot at Google, who launched the music service overseas today, by accusing its failure to bury links to illegal music downloads and torrents in the search engine results of undermining their efforts with Google Play.

BPI executive Geoff Taylor said, "We don't think it makes any sense for them to be doing something which does support artists and then, on the other hand, undermine artists by referring consumers to illegal sites. We personally think three months should be long enough to get it working."

Taylor acknowledged that the service's UK launch will allow for more competition and easy access to legal music, but noted that Google Play will only be a positive once it facilitates the fall of illegal downloading. A Google Play rep said that the service is entirely separate from their search engine, noting, "The way that our search engine works is a completely separate algorithm from anything we do on Google Play."
