The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper Artwork Auctioned Off
Posted by Joseph Lee on 11.14.2012

BBC reports that a collage by Sir Peter Blake used to create art for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band has been auctioned off for $87,598. The artwork was created with pop artist Jann Haworth. It features Sgt. Pepper along with the four Beatles.

Copies were included with the album and were intended for fans to cut out and keep.

James Rawlin, the senior specialist in modern British paintings for Sotheby's, said it was "a tangible slice of rock history".

He said: "Sergeant Pepper['s Lonely Hearts Club Band] had a huge impact on the cultural landscape - it was the first concept album, when music, story, image and studio expertise all came together."

The collage came from architect Colin St John Wilson's collection. It was presented to his wife by Sir Peter after it was finished. The 12x12 inch work had the message: "For M.J. from Peter and Jann".

The album was The Beatles' eighth and was released in 1967. Sir Peter Blake and Jann Haworth designed all of the artwork including a cove featuring a collage of famous figures including Marilyn Monroe, Lenny Bruce and WC Fields.
