Black Sabbath Voted Most Important British Metal Act Of All Time

According to a poll by the BPI (along with magazines Kerrang! and Metal Hammer), Black Sabbath are the most important British hard rock act of all time.

The band have sold over 70 million records worldwide including the 1970 album Paranoid. The earned 45% of the votes in a poll of over 3,600 hard rock/metal fans. Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin each took one fifth of the votes.

Black Sabbath said in response: "We are honored and flattered to be acknowledged in a poll like this which is voted for by the fans. We thank you."

Meanwhile the poll also questioned what the home of Metal was, and 75% said it was the UK. 67.3% called Britain a "world force" in genre. Three out of four fans believe that the UK is still producing great metal bands, with While She Sleeps most likely to have future success. Another question said that 40% of fans discover metal before they are a teenager.

In other interesting statistics, 79% stating they felt energized after listening to their favorite bands and 71% said the music helped get them through tough times. 65% said they made friends through Metal. Only 12% said that Rock and Metal were the only genres they listened to, as other genres like Indie, Blues and Electronic/Dance all had mentions.

Of all the metal albums out there, Metallica's 1991 self-titled release was named as the most ideal introduction to the genre. The album sold 30 million copies worldwide and had the top 10 UK songs "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters".
