Wayne Coyne Agrees to Drop Acid With Fan as Payback for His Bomb-Scare
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 11.24.2012

Pitchfork reports that Wayne Coyne, lead singer of The Flaming Lips, has accepted a request from a fan to take acid with him and Yoko Ono after he missed his flight due to a bomb-scare he caused earlier this month.

Coyne was stopped at Will Rogers airport in Oklahoma City on November 10 when a dead grenade in his his luggage set off alarms at a TSA checkpoint. Coyne claimed to authorities he was given the weapon as a joke. He was released when the TSA decided the grenade was harmless, but several flights were cancelled.

One passenger wrote a lengthy blog on what happed: "All we could see was Wayne standing by the security checkpoint with a bunch of agents around his bag. I was stuck near the food court, wasn't able to cross the airport to get to my gate. Flight left without me, all because of Wayne Coyne. I think Wayne Coyne should reimburse me, at a minimum I want to drop acid with him and Yoko Ono."

Regarding the fan's quest, Coyne stated: "That sounds like fun. I can't speak for Yoko, but I would say yes, let's do that."

On the incident, Coyne said: It was an actual grenade that was now missing its explosive parts and painted gold. I just threw this gold grenade in my bag and had not quite thought about it. They all believed what I was saying; they all believed it was just a dumb accident. The bomb squad guy came out, and once he comes out, there's two weeks of paperwork that has to be filled out. Everybody could immediately tell what it was. But it's too late-- the merry-go-round had to go its whole way around before you could get off."

Coyne said that the Flaming Lips album was inspired by the band member Steven Drozd when he was in the middle of a drug addiction he has now recovered from. Coyne said, "It was probably the worst time of his life. I knew he was really, really struggling. He was in a bad way."
