Pussy Riot Documentary To Screen At 2013 Sundance Film Festival
Posted by Joseph Lee on 11.30.2012

HitFlix reports that a documentary about Pussy Riot will premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

The documentary, called Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer, will focus on the arrest and trial of the Russian band. It was co-directed by Mike Lerner (producer of Hell and Back Again and The Afghans) and Maxim Pozdorovkin (producer and director of Capital)

Three members of the band were arrested in March for a concert inside Moscow's main cathedral, in which they performed and danced to a "punk prayer" to save Russia from Vladimir Putin, who was elected to his third term as President. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich were charged with hooliganism and sentenced to two years in Russian prison. Putin himself said they shouldn't have been punished harshly. Two other members of the group left Russia in August, and said they were planning on "recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new actions."

Here's a synopsis: Three young women face seven years in a Russian prison for a satirical performance in a Moscow cathedral. But who is really on trial: the three young artists or the society they live in?"

The film is credit to the UK and the Russian Federation, the home countries of the filmmakers, and is part of Sundance's World Cinema Documentary Competition. Sundance runs from January 17-27.
