Jenni Rivera's Filly Brown Co-Star Says Her Performance Was Oscar Worthy
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.10.2012

Edward James Olmos told Billboard that Jenni Rivera's performance in her acting debut Filly Brown was Oscar worthy. Rivera died in a plane crash with six others in Mexico yesterday. The film will be released in 2013.

He said that he couldn't believe she had died and said he had been looking forward to spending more time with her to promote the film in late April (when it will open through Indomina Releasing).

Olmos said: "News of the plane crash tore my heart out. Jenni was just an amazing force. From the very beginning I've said that she could garner an Academy Award for her work in 'Filly Brown.' She had a tough life, but she also had an extraordinary gift. She touched millions of people and she'll be missed."

In a previous interview, Rivera said she was proud of her work on the film. It stars Lou Diamond Phillips and Gina Rodriguez, who plays the title role of an aspiring Los angeles rapper. Rivera played her drug-addicted mother, who is in prison. Rivera said: "I had to dig deep for the role. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. If I can make Edward James Olmos cry, to me that means it was a success."

She recorded the song "Hurts So Bad" with Olmos for the film, which is an oldies-themed song. The soundtrack's producers Lisa "Khool-Aid" Rios and Edward "E-Dub" Rios previously said they wanted the song on the final track list.
