Frank Ocean's Channel Orange Voted Best Album Of The Year
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.18.2012

Musicweek reports that Frank Ocean's Def Jam album Channel Orange has topped HMV's Poll of Polls as the best album of 2012.

The album had 22 nominations in total among critics. Five publications voted it as their album of the year, including the Guardian, the Evening Standard and Music Week. Another seventeen, including Mojo, NME, The Fly, The Times, the BBC, and Rolling Stone have it in their top 5.

John Hirst, HMV's music manager, said: "It's no surprise that Frank Ocean has come so high up in many critics' top-tens he's hugely talented and his name's been on a lot of people's lips for a few years now. There's a certain Stevie Wonder quality about him, and aside from having released a truly wonderful debut album, Frank has also earned a great deal of credit in the way he has challenged Hip Hop stereotypes. I think we're going to hear a lot more from him in future."

Second place went to Jack White's Blunderbuss. Tame Impala's third album Lonerism is #3 after "album of the year" awards from NME and Filter. Grimes has #4 with 14 nominations for Visions, including a #1 spot from Rough Trade. Grizzly Bear's Shields closes out the top 5, which had 14 nominations.

The rest of the top ten are Jessie Ware Devotion; Kendrick Lamar Good Kid, m.A.A.d City; Beach House Bloom; The Maccabees Given to the Wild; and Mercury Prize winners Alt-J with An Awesome Wave.

Bob Dylan made the list with Tempest in the top twenty. Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball (#23) and Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas (#30) land in the top thirty.

The results are put together by "collating, aggregating and weighting the various nominations published across thirty music titles, national press and online sites."
