The third season of The Voice is over, with a woman taking home the win for the first time. Cassadee Pope, the former lead singer of pop-punk band Hey Monday, was named the winner in the finale on Tuesday night. Pope beat out Scotland native rocker Terry McDermott, who placed second while soul man Nicholas David was third.
Pope and McDermott were both on Blake Shelton's team, giving him the win for a second straight season. David was on Cee Lo Green's team. Pope benefited from a new system this season that gave America more power to determine the winner, particular via iTunes sales where she consistently topped her fellow contestants. Several of Pope's songs placed at #1 on the iTunes chart with her cover of Miranda Lambert's "Over You" knocking Psy's "Gangnam Style" from its lengthy reign at the top spot at the end of November.
Pope is now not only the first woman to win but the first non-R&B artist to do so, following in the steps of past winners Javier Colon (Season One) and Jermaine Paul (Season Two). Pope now wins a recording contract with Universal Music Group, though she will likely not be alone as in the past all of the final four (and some others) have been signed by their respective coaches even if they didn't win.
