Adele Named AP Entertainer Of The Year
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.20.2012

Billboard reports that Adele has been named The Associated Press Entertainer of the Year.

Out of 132 ballots from members and subscribers of the AP, Adele beat over vote-getters including Taylor Swift, Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James, PSY and the cast of Twilight. They were asked to vote for the person who had the most influence on entertainment and culture in 2012.

Adele's had a great year that started at the Grammy awards and ended with the birth of her son in October. She also recorded the theme song to the James Bond film Skyfall. Her second album 21 has sold 10 million copies in the US, only the 21st album since 1991 to get to diamond. It was also the highest-selling album on iTunes for the second year in a row thanks to hits like "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep".

David Panian, news editor for Michigan's Daily Telegram, said: "It just seemed like you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing one of her songs."

Women have won Entertainer of the Year the most in the six years it has been around. Previous winners include Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Betty White and Tina Fey, with Stephen Colbert is only male winner.

At the Grammy Awards, Adele won six awards including album of the year. It was also her comeback from vocal cord surgery, which caused a standing ovation in the Staples Center. She said in her acceptance speech that she had "a bit of snot" as she cried, and said: "Mum, girl did good! This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone's been through it: just a rubbish relationship."

Her love life is also better this year, as she is dating Simon Konecki. The two have a son together. In an interview with Vogue earlier this year, she said she was done with being a "bitter witch" and writing break-up records. When she announced in June that she was pregnant, her website crashed from heavy traffic. As she raises her son and basks in her success, she is taking some time away from music. The only except was "Skyfall", which was recorded with 21 producer Paul Epworth at the Abbey Road Studios in London with a 77-piece orchestra. It quickly climbed to the top of digital charts.

Joe Butkiewicz, executive editor of the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, added: "There was an overwhelming embrace of Adele and her music. And that was never more evident to me than when I heard teenagers express their enthusiastic expectations for the new James Bond movie because Adele performed the theme song."

The song was nominated for a Golden Globe and is on the shortlist of 75 songs for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. No Bond song has won an Oscar, but this could be the one that does.
