UK Music Fans Legally Able to Rip Music From CD Soon
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 12.21.2012

Even many, many people do it--and programs like iTunes include the capability to do so--it is technically illegal for citizens in the UK to rip music from CD to be used on MP3 players. That is set to change soon however, as Music Week reports that the UK government is planning to reform copyright laws, with Business Secretary Vince Cable saying that it is "not only common sense but good business sense."

The new measures will allow the copying of music for personal use, parody and for teachers to use in educational purposes. However, songwriters are criticizing the plans, claiming that their music can be copied and replicated without permission from artists. They are calling upon the Government to introduce a levy paid by music-playing device manufacturers called an "iPod tax." Musicians' Union general secretary John Smith said of the news, "We feel strongly that the lack of fair compensation will significantly disadvantage creators and performers in relation to the vast majority of their EU counterparts."
