Cassette Tapes Sales In The UK Increase In 2012
Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.07.2013

The Official Charts Company reports that cassette tapes sales tripled in the UK in 2012, mostly thanks to the Welsh band Feeder.

The Twitter account posted: #OfficialChartFact: Sales of cassette singles, yes CASSETTE singles, tripled in 2012 to ermm 604 units. Guess what the biggest seller was? Sorry to disappoint hopeful Rachel Stevens fans but #OfficialChartFact: Biggest selling cassette single of 2012 was Borders by @FeederHQ.

The sales of cassette singles were 218 in 2011. Feeder released their single "Borders" on CD, cassette and 7" in January of 2012, from their eight studio album Generation Freakshow. The album peaked at #13 last year and the single peaked at #52. 480 cassettes were bought by collectors and fans last year, nearly 80% of the market.

As for albums, 3,823 cassette albums were sold in the UK in 2012. The one that sold the most was French singer Charles Aznavour's She - The Best Of.

Feeder originally charged at #60 in 1997 with "Tangerine". Their highest charting career singles were 2001's "Buck Rogers" (#5) and 2005's "Tumble and Fall" (#5).
