A$AP Rocky Debuts At #1 On Billboard 200
Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.23.2013

A$AP Rocky's Long Live A$AP has debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, which sold 139,000 copies. This is the first debut album to get to #1 since 2 Chainz's Based on a T.R.U. Story on September 1, 2012 (Although 2 Chainz did release two albums previously as part of Playaz Circle). Rocky's album also has a top five hit single on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with "F**kin' Problems", which features Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which sold 854,000 downloads.

Rocky's first charting song came when he was a guest on a remix of Rihanna's "Cockiness (Love It)". It had four weeks on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs starting December 10, 2011, selling 54,000 downloads (19% of the song's overall sales).

The other debut in the top ten this week belongs to Kidz Bop 23, which comes in at #2 with 78,000. This is the best sales week for a Kidz Bop album since 2006. The last album to sell more was Kidz Bop 10, which came in at #3 on August 19, 2006 with 117,000. The last four releases in the series started with 59,000 and 70,000. The album features kid-friendly covers of Billboard Hot 100 hits like Rihanna's "Diamonds," Justin Bieber's "As Long As You Love Me" and One Direction's "Live While We're Young."

This is the fifth #2 set for the franchise, which has yet to get a #1 album. It has had 35 entries on the Billboard 200 with sixteen in the top ten. The last album, Kidz Bop 22, started at #2 with 64,000. The series has sold 13.3 million albums overall in the US. The best-selling title was the first album in 2001, which sold 959,000.

1. A$AP Rocky - Long Live A$AP (139,000)
2. Kidz Bop 23 (78,000)
3. Pitch Perfect soundtrack (45,000)
4. Taylor Swift - Red (41,000)
5. Bruno Mars - Unorthodox Jukebox (39,000)
6. Les Miserables soundtrack (just under 39,000)
7. The Lumineers - The Lumineers (38,000)
8. Phillip Phillips - The World From The Side of the Moon (25,000)
9. Mumford & Sons - Babel (25,000)
10. One Direction - Take Me Home (23,000)

Last week's #1 album, Chris Tomlin's Burning Lights, fell to #22 with 16,000. A large portion of the album's first-week sales were from pre-orders and non-traditional sales, so the decline was expected. The drop from #1 is the biggest since Michael Buble's Christmas fell from #1 to #24 dated January 14, 2013 because of the post-Christmas sales drop.

Album sales this week totaled 4.97 million copies, down 2% compared to last week (5.09 million) and down 2% compared to last year (5.06 million). Year to date album sales stand at 16.32 million, up 2% compared to the same total at this point last year (15.95 million).
