"Love Me" is a hit...
Lil Wayne's manager and co-CEO of Blueprint Group Cortez Bryan, along with producer Mike WiLL Made It, talked about the success of Wayne's new single "Love Me", which was released in late December.
The song features both Drake and Future and went from 53-16 on the Hot 100 with 171,000 downloads. That makes its sales total 249,000. It is successful only weeks after YMCMB's DJ Stevie J and DJ E-Feezy debuted the song at a Miami club.
Bryant said he passed the record to key influences in radio and clubs. Program directors began adding the song (from I Am not A Human Being II, out March 26) to radio playlists. Universal and YMCMB are looking for additions on the rhythmic and R&B/Hip-Hop stations, where it has 1,300 spins.
Bryant said: "It happened really fast and organically; it didn't take months to build. That speaks for itself, that the record is that powerful."
Phillip David March, PD at mainstream R&B/hip-hop station WGZB in Louisville, KY, said: "It will be a No. 1 record for [R&B/hip-hop] radio. Crossover? I just don't know because even [edited], it's still got provocative lyrics. It's hard to say."
Mike WiLL Made It (G.O.O.D. Music's "Mercy" and Juicy J's "Bandz A Make Her Dance") seemed to have a different opinion. He added: "It's almost like Megatron: All the pieces just came together. I'm not trying to sound like a cocky-ass producer, but it's right on time. Nothing sounds like that on the radio."
"Love Me" is the third single from Wayne's upcoming album after "My Homies Still" (last June, #38 on the Hot 100) and "No Worries" (last September, #29). A music video is currently on the way for the latest song.
Bryant said: "The pop side hasn't moved yet. They take longer to get on these things. My expectations aren't for that, though. I just put it out as another [R&B/hip-hop] single. So if it crosses over to pop, that'd be wonderful."
