Justin Bieber Gets Fifth #1 On Billboard 200
Posted by Joseph Lee on 02.06.2013

Justin Bieber has made history by getting his fifth #1 album on the Billboard 200, as Believe Acoustic sold 211,000. Bieber is now the only artist to have five #1 albums before turning 19 years old, which will happen on March 1. He was previously tied with Miley Cyrus, who had four #1 albums before 19.

The new album also gives Bieber a #1 album in four consecutive years, something that's only been done by nine acts in the 57-year history of the chart. 75% of the album's sales were from downloads thanks to strong pre-orders through iTunes. iTunes pre-orders made up 20-25% of the album's first week of sales. It was available for pre-order a month before its release on December 21, likely aided by download gift cards after Christmas.

The album features eight acoustic or live songs from Bieber's album Believe, along with with three new songs: "Yellow Raincoat," "I Would" and "Nothing Like Us." Bieber's previous four #1 albums include My World 2.0 (2010), Never Say Never: The Remixes (2011), Under the Mistletoe (2011) and Believe (2012).

The top four of this week's chart are all debuts. Coming in at #2 is Andrea Bocelli's Passione selling 94,000 copies. Bocelli has yet to get a #1 album but now has two #2 albums. His previous #2 was 2009's My Christmas, which spent five weeks at that position. The album is also available in Spanish and is called Pasion, where it charted separately at #59 with 7,000 sold. It's on top of the Latin Albums chart, which is his second #1 after 2009's Mi Navidad.

Tegan and Sara hit #3 with their album Heartthrob selling 49,000, a career best. That's almost two times their previous best, when 2009's Sainthood debuted at #21 with 24,000. Heartthrob is also #1 on the Rock Albums chart, where they had two top tens with 2007's The Con and 2009's Sainthood. 71% of the album sales came from downloads, where it is #2 on the Digital Albums chart. Believe Acoustic is #1 there.

The final debut is Charlie Wilson at #4 with Love, Charlie, selling 44,000 copies. It is #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This is the third solo top ten for Wilson, after Charlie, Last Name Wilson (#10, 2005) and Uncle Charlie (#2, 2009). His latest album is the fourth with his name in the title. His last, Just Charlie was released in 2010 and both debuted and peaked at #19.

Downloads made up large portions for Justin Bieber and Tegan & Sara, but didn't make up very many of Wilson or Bocelli's sales. They made up 17% and 10%, respectively. Both of their audiences are older and likely prefer Cds over downloads.
