Grammy Awards Boost Billboard Chart Sales for Mumford & Sons, Fun., Rihanna, and More

Billboard reports that Nielsen SoundScan's tracking data indicates bolstered sales for Mumford & Sons and Rihanna due to the impact of the Grammy Awards.

Mumford & Sons' album Babel won album of the year. The album then became this week's biggest selling album selling 54,000 copies for the week ending February 10. This was a 50% gain compared to the previous week. The band also performed twice during the show. Their hit single, "I will Wait" got the largest unit gain on the Digital Songs Chart, it hit number 12 from number 34 with 104,000 sales, a 116% increase up from 48,000 units.

Fun.'s "Some Nights" song sold an additional 30,000 copies (an 87% increase) after the band won two trophies for best new artist and song of the year.

Rihanna's Unapologetic album rose in sales of 27% with 24,000 copies sold. Maroon 5's Overexposed went up 59% with 22,000 copies sold. And Adele's 21 also saw an increase of 14% with an additional 22,000 copies sold. Adele won the first award of the night and presented in one category.

In addition for Rihanna, her latest single "Stay" saw a 289% increase in sales and sold 67,000 copies after selling only 17,000 the previous week.

Overall album sales on the chart this week totaled 5.81 million units, an 11% increase compared to last week. This was a 15% decrease with a comparable sales week of 2012 (6.83). Digital track sales totaled 27.32 million downloads, up 6% compared with last week (25.80 million). This was down 6% compared to the comparable week of 2012 (28.93 million).
