Stevie Wonder Criticizes Lil Wayne For His Lyric About Emmett Till
Posted by Joseph Lee on 02.16.2013

The Huffington Post reports that Stevie Wonder has criticized Lil Wayne for his sexual lyric about Emmett Till in the remix of Future's song "Karate Chop. Till was a black Chicago teen who was tortured and murdered in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman in Mississippi. It had a huge impact on the topic of race and civil rights in the country.

He said: "You can't equate that to Emmett Till. You just cannot do that... I think you got to have someone around you that - even if they are the same age or older - is wiser to say, 'Yo, that's not happening. Don't do that'."

He added that he was a fan and friend of Wayne, and only brought it up when he was asked about the lyrics in an interview.

Till's family have asked for an apology and Epic Records, Future's label, said the official version won't have the vulgarity. They added they are using "great efforts" to take it down.

Wonder added: "Sometimes people have to put themselves in the place of people who they are talking about. Imagine if that happened to your mother, brother, daughter or your son. How would you feel? Have some discernment before we say certain things. That goes for me or any other (song)writer."
