Dave Grohl Debuts Sound City Documentary In London
Posted by Joseph Lee on 02.19.2013

NME reports that Dave Grohl debuted his Sound City in London last night at the Vue Cinema in Leicester Square.

The film features Stevie Nicks, Paul McCartney, ex-Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear and Josh Homme, among others. It focuses on the recording studio in Van Nuys, California, where albums like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Nirvana's Nevermind were recorded. When it closed two years ago, Grohl bought its recording desk and decided to make a film about it.

He said: "We started this project almost two years ago. Originally it was just gonna be, like a 15-minute short film or YouTube clip, to pay tribute to this awesome recording desk that I bought that Nirvana made 'Nevermind' on. I figured well, we'll just tell the story about this really great board. And then it blew up into a film, a movie, where I got to sit down and talk to all of my heroes about music. It's more than just a retrospective documentary about the studio, it's really a discussion about the human element of music and what it means to play music, to have human beings play music with other human beings and how important it is and how you can find really magic moments in that.

We didn't go to like a big Hollywood movie studio, we did it all ourselves, we actually intentionally kept all the Hollywood people out though because we wanted to tell the story the way we thought it should be told as musicians, who understand this. But the intention of this film is really to inspire the next generation of musicians to fall in love with music as much as we did.
"

The run in London continues tonight with a show at the Forum with several members of the Sound City Players. It's unknown who will join him but previous performers include Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Fear's Lee Ving, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, Brad Wilk Of Rage Against The Machine, Alain Johannes, Chris Goss and more. All were featured on the soundtrack of the documentary.
